Traverse City Recommendations?
« on: July 15, 2008, 09:27:13 PM »
Hi Everyone,

Great Message Board,

I am making the trip up to northern Michigan this weekend and playing Arcadia Bluffs, High Pointe, and Black Forest, with room for one more round.

What other course would you recommend fitting in to the rota?

PS - Looking forward to seeing TD's work at HP and BF again.  Pics to follow.

Thanks!

I really liked Forest Dunes in Roscommon an hour east.

logistic issues are what direction is home, how much time, 2 a day? where are you staying..  and eating?

take in Boones Inn at Long Lake for a great steak on SW side of TC..
take in Carruso's in Alba , just nW of BF via beeline (but ne of mancelona on M31) for really great pizza and other italian special fare

echo.. Forest Dunes if you're heading SouthEast from BF..

might chance Dunmaglas near Charlevoix to N from BF or just take in Treetops E of Gaylord very close to BF..

Kingsley is S of TC..

will be near BF in late July, early aug..   advise conditions//

Dunmaglas is excellent and 50 miles north of Traverse City. The Leelanau Club is also very nice and maybe 30 miles away. At the Traverse Resort I feel that the Wolverine is the best offering of the 3 courses there.

Best Played So Far This Season:
Crystal Downs CC (MI), The Bridge (NY), Canterbury GC (OH), Lakota Links (CO), Montauk Downs (NY), Sedge Valley (WI)

If you can get a round at the Kingsley Club, which is doable, that would be my definite first choice.

If not, I second Forest Dunes in Roscommon, however it is about an hour and twenty from TC.

Bay Harbor (Links/Quarry) also is a pretty spectacular round, despite what some on this site may say...

If playing at the Grand Traverse Resort, the Wolverine is THEIR best course IMO, but they also are operating Lochenheath this summer, which is just up the road and a very nice course; better than the three the resort owns.

There are definitely plenty of options...

Crystal Downs or Kingsley Club, some begging might work ;D
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

Brent,

I'll second Stella inTC as a great place for a meal.  Feel free to give the owner Paul a little grief as well!  One of my fraternity brothers from Hillsdale.  IF you are headed back from north of town, swing back through Elk Rapids and eat at Pearl's.  It's fantastic!

As for the other round.  My brother and I really ewnjoyed our round at LochenHeath over Memorial weekend. Tee-times are made through Grand Traverse Resort.

Cheers!

I just got back from a weekend in TC.  Enjoyed Highpointe.  Played the other 2 rounds at A-Gam-Ing resort.  Their "Torch" course is nothing special and doesn't really have anything worth seeing.  Their sundance course was fun to play in the wind.
From talking to the bag-boys around different courses, Lochenheath is the place to play up there.  They all like it better than The Bear.
If you're up for a drive, you might want to consider Belvedere.  I played that earlier this year and was smitten with it's understatement.
