Wellshire Golf Course, Denver, Colorado.

Designed by Donald Ross, the original drawings still exist.

Lester--

Good call on Gibson Island......

I believe that Timber Point was expanded to 27 holes by William Mitchell and that the land for the original 18 is still there and can be restored totally.  At least, that is how it appeared when I last visited.

Country Club of Buffalo's 1912 US Open course.  Won by John McDermott.  Hagen was forbidden to play by his head pro at Country Club of Rochester, but allowed to tag along and play a practice round.  Only par six hole ever used in a USGA Open, to my knowledge.  Course was tweaked by Travis for the Open, then examined by Ross (and probably adjusted) before Ross was retained to build new/current layout in Williamsville (10 miles east of Buffalo).

Detroit Golf Club North is one that I can think of.  It seems to me to be a good case study, inasmuch as it serves as the "big" course at that club, the one that is the "tournament" course, while the Par-68 South course is the kid brother.
Two Donald Ross courses, such that it is like a medical researcher studying twins.
The South Course was neglected, thankfully, by ambitious tournament committees over the years.  Meanwhile, the North underwent a series of facelifts about as often and about as successfully as Phyllis Diller.
Recently, the simple goal for the South Course was to "restore" it with proper, original mowing lines and bunker work.
And to me, the "little" South Course is much more pleasant than the "big" North Course.

The four that I would consider taking the job, and which I think are most realistic, are:

Timber Point
Cobbs Creek
Shawnee on the Delaware
Prince's, England (just like Timber Point and Shawnee -- they butchered the 18 to make it 27)
Kawana, Japan (putting in Alison's original green designs)

They are starting to move toward doing the work at Shawnee.

Among courses which have only been defaced, I would vote for Bel Air first, but it ain't gonna happen.

Gibson Island would be cool, but there are a lot of expensive homes in the way of the abandoned nine, so I doubt that's going to happen.  Sharp Park is even more difficult, my impression is that the ocean and the sea berm are in the way of a true restoration.

My dream job would be to restore one of the remaining Thomas courses.  It would be nice to at least see someone do a bang up job on one.  Maybe LACC will be the first. ?  Not sure LaCumbre could be unfortunately.  You would have to buy back about a bilion in realestate...and then get the approavals!  Maybe some of the holes at least.

I agree with Indian Canyon up north here.  Additional resources alone would be a great change there.  It remonds me of Papago.  Years of limited budget is taking its toll.

Timber Point has always sounded fascinating to me.  Does anyone have any old drawings/aerials/pics of what was once there?  or do I need to go buy Wexlers book?  (I'm assuming its in there)

Kalen, you need to buy them both regardless. They are musts.

Your probably right...I browsed thru one in a book store a couple of years and it looked like really good stuff.

With my B-day coming up in a couple months, I'll let the boss know what she can get me.  ;D

How about Ponkapoag?  36* holes of Donald Ross are waiting there for the right architect...

It will never happen, of course, since the local politicians would never be able to do it, even if they saw the value in it.  But it's nice to think about.

* or is it 27?  I remember 36, but their web site says 27...

Hello Ralph!

I've always heard such great things about Belvedere that it wasn't one I'd have thought of as needing restoration.  Just the usual - returning greens and bunkers to reflect early aerials?

John, I thought John Harbottle did Stanford a while back?  I have not been there since 87 when I was doing an internship with RTJII so I am unclear on the history there since.

I too would go with Princes.  Though I thought the WWII did most of the butchering.  The club had an opportunity to right the wrong, but chose to forge ahead with a new design using loads of the old course.  It would have been interesting to be a fly on the wall for those committee meetings.

Closer to where I grew up, Rogell would be my choice.  Its a flower waiting to bloom.

To me, it's easy.
Woodcrest (Flynn) in Southern NJ.   There's a really fine golf course there under all the trees.

A friend played there this year and paced the width of one of the  fairways - it was 18 paces wide!

The Country Club of Havana.

I know it's NLE, but I doubt that whatever has been built over it would be missed. As soon as Fidel kicks, send in the the Donald Ross historians and the 'dozers.

Martin,

On Ponkapoag:

Brian Silva is doing a Master Plan on the #1 course.

The political heavyweights in MA are ready to sign off on a 25 lease management plan for the facility.

What would you restore on the current Rockaway Hunting Club course?
