Golf trip suggestions?
« on: June 17, 2008, 04:28:41 PM »
My buddies from Pittsburgh asked me for a golf trip suggestion in late August.

Bandon and Whistling Straights are all booked. Pinehurst and Myrtle too hot. Any ideas?

Northern Michigan...excellent golf and maybe cooler than your other possiblities.  (I posted a bunch of pictures of Treetops 3 weeks ago)

for something unusual, Riudoso NM...in the mountains of NM --several nice courses in the area.

Good luck.

Bart

Whats the course (in Wisconsin, I think) that JK raves about?

I love Erin Hills and they recently sent me this offer: http://tinyurl.com/3t6ybq  Lawsonia is also close enough for a day trip and is much cheaper.  Add this to the Ho Chunk casino and it is a can't miss trip.

You could even think of taking a trip to beautiful PEI, check out some of these deals for this summer.

All of the ideas so far are great, but this one would be particularly intriguing to me.  Especially if you started just north of Detroit and worked your way north.  Shephard's Hollow, Treetops, Bay Harbor, Arcadia Hills, etc.  That's a tough lineup against most anything else given that Bandon and Whistling are booked.

Incidentally, I don't think Pinehurst would be THAT hot, but you would be fighting your way down there against the US Am on #2.

Are you warming up your previously lukewarm regards for Lawsonia?

I think Lawsonia is a fantastic value very similar to Bandon Crossings.  I just believe the infrastructure is too poor to center around a destination golf trip.  It would make a fabulous warm up or side trip for Erin Hills.

I think Bart hit it on the nose. There are many great options in Michigan. IMO start with Tullymore and Arcadia Bluffs (even though they aren't that close together), and fill in with any number of other options and you'd have a trip rivaling some of the resorts you mentioned.

New Mexico is a good suggestion as well (although we don't rival Michigan on the quantity standpoint). Paa-Ko Ridge and Black Mesa are as good as the best of Michigan, but Michigan is much stronger after that.

Also consider Colorado, whether you stay around Denver or go west into the mountains for Lakota Canyon and Redlands Mesa. Lots of good reasonably priced courses.

I would suggest the Monterey Peninsula.

If time and money are not a problem, you go to Monterey

Pebble Beach
Spyglass
Poppy Hills
Spanish Bay
Pasatiempo

Swing south and play Trump LA, Torrey Pines, Barona Creek and Rustic Canyon.

Michigan is nice because you got Arcadia Bluffs, Treetops, Bay Harbor, Tullymore and possibly a long drive to Greywalls.

Kiawah Ocean Course et al would not suck, maybe parlay that with Caledonia/True Blue and something else....

A journey into the desert could be fun, play We Ko Pa and Talking Stick......I'm sure there are countless others too.....

Cape Breton Highlands Links in Nova Scotia.  Good weather, great golf architecture, and the price is great (even with the bad value of the US dollar).

Maine is also very good in the heat of summer.

My buddies from Pittsburgh asked me for a golf trip suggestion in late August.

Sail up the Great Lakes to Duluth.

Play Donald Ross's Northland CC.

Drive north to play the Brauer Trail: Giants Ridge Quarry, Giants Ridge Legend, Wilderness at Fortune Bay.

Not too hot during the day (usually). Refreshingly cool at night.

Pack the mosquito repellent.

(I second Dan Herrmann's suggestions, too.)

I- Fly Pittsburgh to Tampa or Orlando and drive toward Ocala to play the following - World Woods Pine Barrens and Rolling Oaks, El Diablo, Brooksville CC, Golden Hills.  If you are able to access them, add Black Diamond Ranch's Quarry, Southern Hills Plantation, and Golden Ocala.

DOWNSIDE - Hot and not very good nightlife options once you are done with golf
PLUSSES - Great daily-fee golf, very inexpensive, and won't be too crowded

II- Fly to Minneapolis/St. Paul and get a minivan and drive 3-4 hours north to play Brauer's courses north of Duluth.  The Quarry is supposed to be his best course.  If you can get on, add Northland to the trip.  Off the radar, try Cloquet.

DOWNSIDE - Might be hard to get to and only offers some casino action for fun
PLUSSES - You'll be the first to play these amongst your friends

III - Head to Charleston as previously mentioned.  Some great golf there.

IV - Baltimore for Bulle Rock (just had the ladies), Beechtree (before it closes), and Mount Pleasant (seriously, this municipal has a great set of 4s).

DOWNSIDE - None
PLUSSES - Close to Pittsburgh, all daily-fee, Beechtree is pretty reasonable

Have fun whatever you choose

The UK or Ireland man.
Closer and cheaper than Bandon-cheaper than Pinehurst

Fly overnigh, play when you land-you only lose your return day-and even then you can play the last day with a perfect connection-particularly from London.

I suggest Wales-cheap,awesome, undiscovered.

Thanks for all the great suggestions, I knew GCA would help! I should have added that these guys have already been to Monterey, I know because I filled in as their 8th that year!

I'll let you know where they go and demand pictures!

How about golfing the I-80 through KneeBraskee?

Besides the obvious Wild Horse, you and your buds could check out some of Jeff Brauer's earlyish  work in and around Lincoln.

Idea #1

Get on the Chambers Bay Band Wagon.

Chambers Bay, Gold Mtn; Olympic.

Home Course.  and Over the mountains to Suncadia.

Weather should be perfect, great dining by the water, multiple other activities, and close to the airport.

Idea #2

Bend OR

Sunriver, Broken Top, Juniper, Tetherow, Pronghorn

http://www.visitbend.com/Discover_Bend_Oregon/Activities_Recreation/Golf_Courses/default.aspx

Weather is perfect, setting is stunning, flyfishing, river rafting, hiking.  Downside alittle pricey to get there!

Idea #3
McCall ID

Whitetail, Jug Mtn, Tamarack and 27 holes at the muni.  Fabulous setting on the banks of Payette Lake.  Uncrowded, perfect weather mid 80's and chilly at night.  Great Steak at "The Mill."  Fishing Boating Hiking.

Downside:  100 miles north of Boise, not commercial airflights so you'd have to drive from there!

I'm going with a group of 12 to Turning Stone in New York - 3 or 4 courses plus a par 3 - also a casino and they don't have a liquor license so it's BYOB.  Contact me at the end of next week and I will let you know what it's like.

Lake Oconee Ga might be a nice pick.

Longshadow, Cuscowilla, Reynolds Plantation.  Should be a nice array of courses to choose from, not too far from ATL airport.  Not much to do at night though.
