Orchard Lake C.C.
« on: July 17, 2002, 10:16:15 AM »
I'm scheduled to play at Orchard Lake C.C. next week. It's located near Bloomfield Hills in Michigan. I would greatly appreciate any info about this course from anyone who has played there or knows its history. I understand that Colt and Alison were involved in the original design. Thanks again in advance.

             Best Regards,

This course will be a real treat...the terrain is quite hilly ,
typically small greens that can be brutally tough if they cut 'em close...were rolling at 12 last year when I played it..
fairly true to original design

Andy,
Dave and I just played there last week. Some exciting things will be happening soon at OLCC, think CHAINSAW. The current bunker work was done by Art Hills so prepare yourself to find your ball up against the lip if you happen to find a bunker. My understanding is that Mr. Hills has claimed that he screwed up on the bunker project here, I credit him for that admission. I wonder if he'll refund the clubs money? The bunkers are also on the docket for a total redo, the super thinks that the faces will be restored.
Anyway, OLCC is a fine course my favorite holes being 1,7,8,11, and 13. I'm not sure what a true C&A course should look like so I can't comment on how true it is to the original design. Without question it is much different today though. The C&A courses I've played are Century, CCofDt., Plum Hollow and here. I can't draw any strong themes from them probabaly based upon the redos they've had. You will be able to notice some of the filled in bunkering that would add much character if the club approves the restoration.
Orchard Lake is a fine club, the club's super A. McMaster does a great job and really "gets it", say hello to Kenny in the shop too.

Andy,

The front nine is fantastic.  The bunker on number one is truly one of the best bunkers in all of Michigan.  #8 might be one of the best holes in the state and after some "Accidental" poisoning of the tree farm on the right, it will get its due.  The back nine is a little disappointing (Only because of how good the front nine is).  If you take your time and walk, you can see where all of the cross bunkers used to be and trees are now.  They have one of the brightest Super's I have ever spoken with.  Within three years, this course will rightly start finding its way back into top 100 lists (If they let the super do what he wants).  Expect to have a lot of fun.

And I took full blame then, and retain such now.  My utter ignorance in not trumpeting a course I have never seen remains inexcusable.
