How good is this week's venue lineup?
« on: May 21, 2008, 11:43:47 PM »
I couldn't help but notice that this week's lineup of courses is one of the better ones I've seen in a while. Between Colonial, Oak Hill and Wentworth, I think this a weekend worth watching. What say you?

David,I really try to like Colonial, but I just don't get it.There are 7 or 8 par 4's that seem like flat pasture golf.It is great the course is firm, but it plays really short with the roll..The two par 5s are uninteresting. It must be just me because the course seems to be on the top of people's Texas list.I don't see how it is a top 10 course in Texas.

For television viewing purposes, I prefer Wentworth in the fall at the World Matchplay.  The course seems to play faster then.

I was really disappointed in the setup of Oak Hill at Micheel's PGA; I remember liking the look of the course during the Ryder Cup and then hardly recognized it during the PGA.

Mike, I think alot of Colonial strength's come from the demands the course places on working the ball both ways. After playing it, I could see why Hogan loved it so. Fade on 2, draw on 3, fade on 5, etc. I would need to think about the par 5's, but I thought 1 to be a solid par 5. You have to come in from the left side. While it's true the course can play firm, the fact that so many wholes "bend" makes the player have to account for that.

Tim,

Do you recall what was different?

David, the other par 5 is 11.Fairly straight long and usually downwind.Has a big mound running down left side.I dont mean to be so harsh. It is no doubt a fine course but in my view overrated.I would guess you wouldn't put it in front of about 10 courses in Cal,maybe more.

You are right, there are about 10 or more in Cal I'd rate in front of it. Still, I'd be proud to call it my club. It's a solid course. Overrated? Perhaps. But I think the Hogan effect and the lack of alot of quality courses in Texas has kept it in the spotlight for so long.

Colonial's appeal for me isn't necessarily its strategic qualities, but the fact that the course as a whole promotes shotmaking and accuracy in a way that many PGA tour courses do not.  It probably isn't one of the top 100 or 200 courses in the country, but it is very solid and interesting nonetheless.

Oak Hill will play soft because it has been a wet few weeks in upstate New York.  However, I believe the course is very fair.  It should be extremely difficult, but the rough will allow for recovery, a change from the 2003 PGA.  The trees look ridiculous on TV, especially on flyovers.  There seems to be a lot of room on the ground, but I hope that we can continue to remove trees against considerable resistance before the '13 PGA.  Pay attention to how players will have serious problems reading the greens.  Several greens (1, 3, 7, 9, 14, 16, 17) have very subtle interior contours that make it very difficult to consistently make putts.

Doug,

The rough was really long during the PGA, as I recall--more akin to old-fashioned U.S.-Open rough.  And the course seemed more tree-choked.  I haven't seen the course for the senior event.  How's it looking?

Is it really possible to appreciate the architecture of a golf course from your living room?

Examples?

David,

Sorry for the sidebar, but I think it is a question best asked on this thread rather than as its own.

No, but that doesn't mean you can't learn anything about a course from watching a tournament broadcast.

I wonder about that...what can we learn about Colonial on the television?

And, is suspecting really learning?
