My wife whom hardly knows the game except what she hears from me. She recognizes and likes the hole.  At this point in time it has become a branding and imaging and marketing icon, yes?

IMO, the tour is way past the point of no return with the hole.  It would be the equivalent of McDonald's going from the Golden Arches to the Silver Dome on its sign.

Since the TPC is only one week a year, you have to think about how the average guy plays the hole as well as the pros.

It's actually quite a bit easier from the front tees, about 110 yards with the shot straight down the widest part of the green and into the slope rather than across it.  The lone bunker's also not in play.  Pete Dye really laid the hole out well to make it as tough as possible for the pros (at that length) and as easy as possible for amateurs.

So long as you can get the ball airborne with a PW  :-X  just about anybody can do okay on the hole.  I've only played it once and walked off with a 2.  Not to brag....... 8)

This hole is a kick-in compared to the infamous "sharks jaws " at Stone Harbor Golf Club in beautiful southern NJ

Instead of a nine or wedge you had from 7 iron to 4 iron   (depending on wind) to a 3500 square foot green shaped like a diamond... memories of prompted my evil twin post which hasn't raised much interest... Muirheads work here is certainly controversial...as Dye's is at TPC

thankfully Sharks Jaws was modified and isn't near as hard now as there are some front and rear bunkers that save many shots...the green was also enlarged fairly dramatically and might be 7000 Square feet today (all in)   


I personally don't see a problem with #17....though I understand the choking  LOL!
