The old course at Cannes Mandelieu...I haven't found much of a connection with Colt other than the bunkering looks like Colt!  I think it's highly unlikely he was involved in the 1891 design, but perhaps a redo later on.

Anyway it looks a really cool course, if a bit flat.

Colt did build Cannes Mougins and it was a celebrated and expensive course for the Riviera millionaires.  But Peter Alliss and Co redesigned it sometime ago and having played some of their courses,  I don't have much hope for that one....about 50% of the original routing survives.

In my opinion, looked at from a number of different vantage points to do with the entire evolution and development of golf architecture Colt should probably be in the top 2-4 of all time.

Andrew:

"Who do you believe is number 1 ?"

I guess I'd have to say Mackenzie.

"How many Colt courses have you played or walked ?"

I really don't know, maybe just Pine Valley! ;)

Paul T,

I am no Colt expert and have played very little of his work. The course claims that he designed their 18 hole 'Old Course'. I am not sure if the Colt course is from 1891 but it is a master piece. It is on a flat piece of land but you never really notice this, high/low elevation is perhaps only 20 feet.
Cannes Mougins is not a patch on it, worth half the green fee but costing somewhat more

Tony,

I will write a full report some time soon.
