How tall the post is...

There are actually 97 other pictures just like this going up the height of that post...when they are all plugged in together it's quite a site...

 A meter is 3.3 ft so 53.42 m = 175.262 ft . That is quite a post
Thompson golf holes were created to look as if they had always been there and were always meant to be there.

I would assume that is the exact (surveyed) elevation above sea level (in meters). It allows a field reference to the topographical map of the site, for verification purposes.

And that looked like about half a meter's worth of post...

We require that spot elevations be noted on staking such as this as it helps us verify that the stakes are in the correct locations. For example, if we arrive at the stake for the 12th tee, we can match the noted spot elevation with what we see on the topographical map. If there is a great discrepancy we will ask the surveyor to come back out and verify the location. Occasionally there will be a deviation of a few feet due to vegetation, erosion or plain old bad mapping. But, for the most part, I am always impressed with the accuracy of today's surveying.
