The Dixie Cup is a gathering of like minded folks who enjoy playing outstanding golf courses in the company of other knuckleheads from  this website.

It is called the Dixie Cup because it is held each year somewhere south of the Mason-Dixon Line. There is a loosely conducted set of matches (which are even more loosely based on the Ryder Cup) between a team representing the north and a team representing the south.

The event is open to anyone from this website (of any playing ability) who cares to participate... and, you can invite guests to join you (i.e. your golf buddies).

It's all about fellowship and fun. Not much is taken seriously... except the course architecture, of course!

Thank you,

I represented the North last year, and it was simply a great weekend. As I have told John and Mike offline, next Fall is up in the air for me so I cannot commit. However, I can recommend both our host and the choice of WWPB. Add in a trip to nearby Surgaloaf by C&C and that is a very nice weekend.

I take exception to "not much is taken seriously".......

I took my somewhat hangover induced 76 VERY seriously.  In fact, it was downright FUN!!

hoping to repeat......

Just think... you would not have shot that 76 if I had not lifted your head from a plate of food and carried your sorry ass home. You would have been sleeping in the parking lot until noon the next day!!!  :o

I'm not sure Weeki Wachee is ready for your act! You might need to bring some "Get Out Of Jail Free" cards.  ;D

Eric,
Are these the wildest looking holes at Brooksville or is the whole course like that?  Looks interesting.

John,

Those holes are routed through an old sand quarry. The rest of the course is actually very much like a parkland course. Bobby Weed is doing renovations which are excellent.

Some nice elevation change as well on the parkland holes.  I wish I had some good pictures of the bunker work by Mr. Weed.  I found a few of 'em around the greens and had a ball  ::)

Jamey, that was seriously a hall of fame performance.... if your hall of fame is occupied by the likes of Billy Martin, Walter Hagen, Mickey Mantle, Johnny Blood McNally, and dare I say John Daly hisowndamnself!  I seriously doubt that anyone on GCA.com will ever top that round of golf on that tough of a course with that big of a throbbing head!  :o ;) ;D

John,

Are you saying that you will only book for the number that put down deposits in the near future and that we won't be able to add numbers at a later date?

I'm probably in a similar position to many others at the moment.  I'm not certain I can make, but I'd love to make it.  I'm probably 60% - 75% at this point.  I didn't want to sign-up only to have to tell you I'm out.

If what you are saying, however, is that in June (for instance) there will be no ability to add additional players, then I wouldn't have a problem taking my chances with my $25 now if you really need critical mass to secure the dates.

Can you please provide us with the date that you'd like to secure the reservation?  Is it next week, end of the month, June, etc?

I am confident we can get some additional times, it's just that we need to get t a group of at least 20 booked ASAP. That keeps another larger group from bumping us out.

Also, please keep in mind that the deposit the group puts up to secure the date is nonrefundable, but if you have to cancel later, you will most likely get your deposit back so long as at least half of the group shows up, you just won't get it back until October 20.

The Dixie Cup Committee has conferred with the mangement at Dunes at Seville and, although the October rate has not been finally decided, the Dunes is anticipating a rate of $35.00 to $40.00 for 18 holes w/ cart. The Dunes is truly a spectacular venue, with housing only visible on the 5th and 7th holes. Any preconceived notions you may have of Art Hills work should be left at the gate; in fact, it has been rumoured that Dunes is largely the work of fellow GCA.comer Mike Dasher.

Please get your deposits in ASAP, as we need to book World Woods now

I played Pine Barrens with John on Saturday and think the World Woods golf experience is not to be missed.  Besides having 2 world class courses (John, who has a great eye, thinks Rolling Oaks is at least as good as Pine Barrens) there is a wonderful 9 hole short course (7 par 3's, 2 par 4's) that can be played for $10 plus 3 'practice' holes (par 3, 4, and 5) that can be played for FREE.  The practice holes and Short course are left firm and fast and I can visualize some of the Dixie Cup participants playing endless golf late in the afternoon on these holes.  So sign up now, it's well, well worth the trip and the Dunes is supposed to be a really good course as well-if Mike Dasher played a major role in the design it will be interesting, fun, and testing.

*** BUMP ***

Per John Cullum...

Dixie Cup V will be in Brooksville Florida. The scheduled dates are October 18 and 19.

10/18 we will tee up at World Woods Pine Barrens in the a.m. with an open afternoon.

10/19 will be at Dunes Golfers Club (f/k/a Dunes at Seville) in the a.m.

Rolling Oaks is already booked for a Junior event both days, but it is anticipated that afternoon times will become available on both Saturday and Sunday.

Costs at World Woods will be $50.00 for the first round of the day and $30.00 for any additional round same day on either course. The short course is available for the bargain rate of $10.00 walking (one of the best bargains in golf). These rates include tax and cart if desired, walking is permitted.

The fee at Dunes is not yet set, but will likely be lower than WW.

Lodging is available at the following nearby hotels (these are the closest hotels to WW, and the HI Ex is relatively new, and amenities are nearby):

Holiday Inn Express,
14112 CORTEZ BLVD.
BROOKSVILLE, FL 34613
352 597 4540
Rate around $90/night

Comfort Inn Weeki Wachee
9373 Cortez Blvd
Weeki Wachee FL
352 596 9000
Rate around $77.00/night

Hotel rates are subject to change, and no advance arrangements have been made. October is considered off season but we will be competing with the Junior Tour participants for lodging. We can probably negotiate a group rate once we have a feel for how many will be making the trip to this incredible part of the State of Florida.

This schedule is very firm. It has been coordinated around the aeration and overseeding schedule, and October is booked every weekend with events at World Woods. We have conferred with the World Woods superintendent and he has promised to work with us on preparation of the course, and he assures us he can have things in fine shape in late October. World Woods had been reputed to be suffering from poor conditions, but their new super has made dramatic improvements in the last 3 years. It is in the best shape it has ever been and gets better every year of late. Dunes has been closed for about 18 months and is planning on reopening in June after a large scale renovation. I walked the course about 4 weeks ago and see no reason it should not be ready to open come June, and by October I am confident it will provide a wonderful golf experience for us. Dunes truly is a hidden gem, and deserves to be seen by this august body. Tom Doak has been meaning to get over to Dunes for about 20 years now and we are hopeful he will be joining us to finally avail himself of this opportunity.

Satellite golf is abundant nearby, with Brooksville CC high on the list with a recent renovation by Bobby Weed including the construction of 3 new holes in and out of a limestone quarry. Pete Dye's Southern Hills Plantaion is on the south side of Brooksville, and Black Diamond Ranch is about 40 minutes up the road. There is also some new course over around Clermont on lake Apopka that a few of you may have heard of, its about an hour away.

IMPORTANT NOTE: WORLDWOODS REQUIRES A NONREFUNDABLE 50% DEPOSIT. THE DEPOSIT IS FULLY CREDITED TO THE GROUP, EVEN IF FEWER THAN RESERVED SHOW UP. IN OTHER WORDS, IF WE BOOK 30 TEE TIMES WE HAVE TO PUT UP $750.00 NONREFUNDABLE, BUT IF ONLY 15 SHOW UP, IT'S ALL GOOD.

WITHOUT A DEPOSIT WE CANNOT SECURE THESE DATES, SO WE NEED A COMMITMENT ASAP. TO SECURE THE DATES YOU WILL HAVE TO PAY $25.00. A SMALL PRICE FOR SUCH A FANTASTIC EVENT ON WORLD CLASS GOLF COURSES.
