Norman's "Toughest Mile in Golf"
« on: April 23, 2008, 11:23:17 AM »
Geoff Shackelford has a posting today about Greg Norman's "Earth" course in Dubai.  In it he quotes Norman as saying:
"“Of course, I think the entire course has a great balance, but the finish will really stand out.  The last four holes will measure exactly a mile, 1760 yards.  I expect it will be considered one of the most challenging and exciting miles of golf, in terms of risk and reward."

This caught my eye as I live in Northern VA and have played Norman's Lansdowne course several times.  As described on the course website (http://www.lansdowneresort.com/Golf/golf_norman_course.asp):

"The last four holes measure exactly 1,760 yards—equal to one mile—creating, according to Norman, “the hardest mile in golf.” Although it has the capabilities to host a major championship, the course is enjoyable for players of varied skill levels, with multiple sets of tees so as not to overwhelm the everyday golfer."

While no one can question Norman's marketing acumen, its a stretch to think the perfect routing conviently measured one mile in both instances.

This has been convieniently borrowed from a course that he used to play in his glory days--LaCosta.  At one time it was a famous finish known as golf's hardest mile.

The whole damn course is hard.  It just isn't very good.
