Playing Options in HOUSTON??
« on: March 25, 2008, 02:32:22 PM »
I good friend of mine will be traveling down to Houston this weekend to watch our SPARTANS triumph over some cinderella type team named Memphis? ;D  He asked me to recommend some courses and as usual I will turn it over to those who know best, you guys!!!!

What are his best options public / private within lets say an hour of the city???

Thanks in advance, GO GREEN....

I seem to recall a whole thread on this very topic maybe 3 months back?

Here it is...

Two great public options are Blaketree National (search for the recent photo collage on it) and High Meadow Ranch. On the plus side High Meadow's Head Pro is GCA'er and snappy dresser Casey Wade. I also like Cypresswood-Tradition and there are some good private options like Champions.

For my own personal benefit I'd like to see your Spartans do well, if they progress in the tournament it would be a nice monetary gain for me.

I agree with Sam on his picks, but they are both a long drive from the basketball action.  As I've always liked MSU despite the rivalry, send me a message and I can give you some more specific recommendations.

Kyle,

I thought about the proximity to Reliant and I was going to mention Gus Wortham, the course where Howard Hughes cut his teeth, but I know how much you liked Gus.

Obviously one should look at Champions, and a few of those Rees courses I would not play. The Fazio and Jack N courses in the Woodleands are good. He would need help from his pro at home though. Redstone might be fun the week before the event there.

Tiger I think I read that Redstone closed this past Sunday until after the tournament.

If on the south side of Houston, its a pretty quick jaunt down 288 to the Wilderness at Lake Jackson, designed by some guy or another.....Fully wooded site, affordable public.

John K's Brother Ken also designed one even closer down 288. Its within housing and I haven't played it in ten years, but unless its condition is down, its worth a play.

Jeff I've heard great things about The Wilderness, I'm holding out on that round until next time you're in town! Southwyck the Ken Kavanaugh course is a nice track but has been hurt by houses. It's a shame that to play a course your line is over a chimney. The houses are almost on top of the cart path and has really turned Southwyck from a must play to a great example of developers screwing up a course.
