Matt Ward,

We all look at courses differently and none of us are right or wrong but I have to tell you Olde Kinderhook is one of my least favorite courses anywhere.

I've played there three times and all three rounds were over five hours with all low handicappers in the group and no one in front of us.

The course is very difficult to play and even more difficult to walk! I played in a U.S. Mid Am qualifier there in 2003, was in the third group out and it took just under six hours!!

Tom Doak wanted the job - it's too bad he didn't get it.

John

Blackstone Ntl. in Sutton Mass.  It's a very difficult walk up and down the hills and across several bridges for long walks between holes, so some may take issue with the routing.

Michael,

I liked Blackstone as well. One nine is much harder to walk than the other (we walked), but I though it was a good golf course...

Played Nantucket and enjoyed it immensely. not as old fashioned as Sankaty Head and without that club's panache but a sterner test of golf for the better player.

I have played about ten original designs by Rees.  I absolutely loved Haig Point.  I have not played it in about ten or twelve years so I can't comment about what is there now.  I loved the tee shots and the shots into the greens.  I think the routing was very good.  I don't remember the greens themselves. But as I recall they were the weakest part of the course.  For me the par threes were great.  I played both on the holes that gave you a choice.

I think Atlantic suffers from the neighborhood.  It is very good but not the same quality of its illustrative neighbors.
Where there is no love, put love; there you will find love.

Not totally sure, but I believe Metropolitan east of Atlanta was the first course that RJ designed.  It closed about 5 years ago and now it's condos.  It was a truly fine golf course that many years ago, and through its shortcomings, got me to thinking about golf course architecture.

Gary,

Metropolitan was designed by the old man, Trent Sr.  It opened in the late '60's and was a popluar course for many years.  Held the Atlanta Open/BellSouth Classic/AT&T Classic Monday qualifier for many years.

Was a fun course to play until Atlanta grew right over it.

Eagle Lodge in Montgomery County, PA.  I always enjoyed playing it while staying at the lodge for work when I used to work for Vanguard.

Unfortunately, it was plowed under to make way for Gary Player's "The Ace Club"

Quintero in rural Phoenix/Peoria AZ... One of those routings that would play even better if the routing was reversed (but for the 3's) IMHO  :)

Solid design in a beautiful setting... though Dakotah Ridge in Morton, MN is a pretty fun design as well :D

Not an original design but his work at the MPCC Dunes was a superb restoration, done on time under budget and a masterful job.

Haig Point - especailly since last year's redo

Briar's Creek

Chanticleer Course at Greenville CC - it's listed as a Robert Trent Jones course, but Rees was directly involved with the design... and he completely renovated the course from stim to stearn a few years ago.

I need to take another look at Arcadian Shores as I have not seen it in years. There were many features on that course that use to remind me of Chanticleer... particularly the bunkering.

Likewise not positive, but I believe Gator Hole, and NLE at Myrtle Beach, was Rees Jones' first solo course.

I must concur with Lou and Matt with regard to Briars Creek between Charleston and Kiawah on Johns Island. http://www.briarscreek.com/
The golf course looks like it has been there forever. The property was a golf course waiting to happen. The only thing better than the course is the Southern Hospitality provided by the staff.

The Golfweek rankings:

Atlantic, #65m
Ocean Forest, #66m
Quintero, #78m
Cascata, #90m

Golf Magazine:

Ocean Forest, #68
Briar's Creek #90

Golf Digest:

Ocean Forest #75

Some of Rees's courses mentioned in the top of Golf Digest state lists:

Haig Point, #14 in SC
Briar's Creek, #8 in SC
Pinehurst #7, #25 in NC
Ocean Forest, #2 in Georgia

I'm curious why Ocean Forest has not been mentioned yet.  A friend of mine once mentioned that Ocean Forest is located on beautiful oceanfront property, and does not capitalize on the location as well as would be expected.

Hi John,

Out of the three originals I've seen, I rank them thusly:

Blackstone National
Pinehills
Talamore

I will leave out the redo-s of his I have played...New Seabury (both), CCNC-Dogwood, and Equinox...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Agree on the hospitality... even with the head professional from London, England! Chris Edwards is a great guy and most hospitable.

Bill,

For some reason, Shadow Hawk didn't ring my bell.  I don't know if it was just the flatness of the site, or maybe how they grew the rough (short bermuda so thick that just being off the fairway was close to a stroke penalty).  I don't recall many details about the course other than it played long and difficult.

I did enjoy Cascata, the variety of holes, uneven lies, tricky green complexes.  Perhaps they went overboard with the water features and the routing didn't seem to flow real well, but the golf was a lot of fun from start to finish.

Michael,

Imagine that, fine hospitality in the South!  As is demonstrated at Briar's Creek, it is purely environmental.  We should all spend a bit of time in the area to purge our pores of what ails us.
