My Strantz and Doak golf trip
« on: March 25, 2008, 09:56:11 PM »
I went on my annual golf wekend with my college buddies last weekend.  We only had 8 this year but I had the second highest handicap at a 6 with one guy who has played in 2 Nationwide events.  We went to the Myrtle Beach area and played Tigers Eye, True Blue and the Heathland course at the Legends.

I am biased as I play Tigers Eye as much as I play any course (my Father is a member) but I love the course, it is a good solid course that is well maintained and beautiful to look at, it won't make you stand in the fairway for minutes at a time contemplating your next shot but it is good fun golf.

I hadn't played True Blue before and couldn't wait, I had been looking forward to it since I booked the trip and it didn't disappoint.  How can a course with fairways being 80 yards wide in some places be challenging but overall it played the hardest for my group.  We were lucky and got to play it in a 20 mph wind.  It is only my second Strantz course to play but I think playing it makes me appreciate Tobacco Road even more than I did and I now love bot places.  I am trying to think of my favorite hole but I really enjoyed most all of them, I liked number 5 quite a bit.

We play Tom Doak's Heathland on Sunday and it was in great condition.  I hadn't played it in probably 12 years but fell in love with the course again.  Unfortuantely, there isn't anything like it here in Atlanta.  One of the guys in my group called it "tricked up" and I kinda chuckled because, in my opinion, he is a fan of cart ball golf with good greens.  Heathland was in very nice condition but it did make you think and we got to play it in a 20 mph wind with gusts up to 35.  It's a shotmakers course and I can see making a ton of birdies as well letting it beat you as well.  I hit 12 fairways and shot 84 somehow, go figure.

Anyway, I know that MB gets a bad rap at times but you can find a good combination of courses.  On this trip, the golf is only part of the fun, it is more about hanging out with old friends but the golf courses were excellent.  I would encourage you to play all three of them.

Sounds like a great trip.  I like Strantz's work and really like True Blue.  I have always found it more fun than Caledonia, which usually gets more praise.

Were you down there this weekend?  I just played Tiger's Eye on Saturday for the first time.  Overall I thought it was a very good course - I'd definitely play it again.  Though I was a bit perplexed by #15... I can't say I've ever played a par 5 where there's no place to layup between 90 and 200 yards.  Still, the greens were in fantastic shape, which always is a nice surprise when you show up to a public course.

No kidding...that's why I stick to only the upper echelon private clubs......

I too echo these sentiments regarding Heathland.

Bruce Dickinson needs more cowbell...

Atlanta & Nashville need more Heathland ;D

CJ, I was misstated, it was two weekends ago, we played it on the 15th.

Their greens are nearly always very good.  You are right, #15 is interesting, I think that the lay up is about 15 yards short of the green, if that is a layup.   I have made my share of 7's on that hole but there is more room to lay up in than it appears from the fairway.  I love the 18th hole, it is right on the cusp of being unreachable for me from the tips but it just tempts the heck out of me.

Brock,

How was the pace of play at True Blue and the Heathland?  Thanks!

I was in our first group both days and the pace of play was pretty good.  I don't recall waiting but maybe two or three times at True Blue.    At Heathlands my group had to wait several times but it was become my buddy in the cart with me can carry it 320 and the group in front of us was still in his range.  Honestly, we had such a great time, I don't recall waiting too much but we might have but I don't think it was an issue.  I had forgotten at what an operation the Legends complex is.
