Basking Ridge, NJ golf recommendations?
« on: February 20, 2008, 08:19:26 PM »
I'm going to a wedding on the "other" coast here in June.

I'd like to play Friday upon coming in, and Saturday before the wedding.

We'll likely play Roxiticus Golf Club Saturday, as that is where the wedding is.

Friday I could travel if the course would warrant it.

I'm a member of a club and could either play as a reciprocal or if hosted I'd be able to go that route.

Any recommendations?

Yes, it is.

I'd like to play there (upon looking it up) on Friday. Anyone with access? Or do they take reciprocal play?

NJ National is in Basking Ridge.  Not sure about access though as it's part of the Club Max/Empire Golf network.

Somerset Hills
Plainfield
NJ National

(If I can get on)

We'll see....

Any other recommendations.

Jed:

I live in nearby Far Hills. Your preferences, if reciprocity permits, should be:

1) Plainfield...simply NJ's 2nd best course (and getting even better!)Worth groveling for!!
2) Somerset Hills. ...wonderful, sporty AWT desing, in need of a little TLC
3) Trump National...v.good Faz, stiff test
4) Hamilton Farm...nice H&F, generally great conditioning, but w/bunker issues.
5) Royce Brook West....Smyers does the Sandbelt reasonably well.
6) NJ National...some good holes, but non-descript and too much housing.

Others w/in 30-40min (and worth it)...Essex County, Mountain Ridge, Baltusrol, The Ridge at Back Brook, Morgan Hill, Hawk Pointe, and Neshanic Valley. Bayonne is 40min away and totally worth it as well.

If you need more info or want to learn more about the reciprocity policies, send me a IM or e-mail,
Steve

I sent you both, Steve!

Thinking:

Baltusrol
Plainfield
Somerset Hills
Ridgewood

Now. Thanks for the info, I'll be contacting you about policies and what not.

Although this is certainly not the only post of this type made on the DG, this to me is a blatant request for access and an inappropriate use of the DG.  If you are a member of a private club that has reciprocal privileges with clubs in other areas, you should ask your club pro for the names of those clubs offering reciprocity and, then, if you would like information as to the relative merits of the reciprocal clubs in the area you are visiting, post an inquiry on the DG.  But to come on the DG and basically ask for access to private clubs is just not an appropriate use of the DG, at least in my opinion.

Mike, thanks for your comments.

I basically got hooked up with a couple of members that told me specifically HOW to request reciprocity--for example, the clubs I/my Pro are going to contact are going to write letters, where on the west coast we typically call or email.

If you read above, you'll see I have been granted contacts by a couple members, Rob and Steve, who put me in touch with certain folks to either help with a round or what not.

My very first post (or one of my first) on GCA was hosting about 20 norcal guys here at my club (Morgan Creek) in an outing, so I'm not here just to "take".

Thanks,

Jed

Not that my opinion matters, but I wouldn't have a problem with you requesting access, Jed. What comes around goes around and we are supposed to be like-minded gentlement here. If I still lived in the area, I would extend an invite at my decidedly more humble former club.

Have fun on the trip, those are some fantastic courses.

One recommendation that I would suggest is to visit Golf House there in Far Hills, if it's open.  When I lived up in NJ, I would go often.  It is definitely worth a couple hours of your time to check out the history of golf and all of the artifacts there.
