Joe, My overall point was to judge the merits of the entire tournament,
by the television coverage, would be more than a bit myopic.

Hate the player not the game.

Adam,

That's why I asked you the questions. I want to know if the bigger picture is made more effective by my viewing participation. You understand there is some sacrifice made by the viewers of this event, and I'm willing if you(or anyone else) convince me it's for the good of needy people, rather than rich pros and amateurs.

Joe, I won't be able to detail the benefits because there's not a lot known about the MPGF, who handles the charity side of things,
I believe Stan Dodd has said on here in the past they do provide support for some of the programs run at local schools.
There just are not too many poor people left on the peninsula to help. Or, the poverty line has moved considerably. For some of the caddies with kids and mortgages, this week is especially  huge during the slow season.

I suspect any loathing, or sacrifice, in watching this TV coverage is limited to a small group of say 1500 people. Or is it 1497, now?
The antics of Gans and Romano are born out of a futile attempt to be like Bill Murray. As is typical, forcing the humor does not work.

Kalen,
See John Cullum's post #11 and tell me he isn't bashing the tournament?

Thanks Adam.

If this group of 1500 is the only part of the population that loathes the presentation, God help our country when we are expected to vote for public officials..... ;D

I didn't mean that in any politically correct kind of way...... :)

Adam,

His first statement is a direct attack on the TV coverage with Ray Romano.

As for his second statement, one persons opinion with no explanation to back it up does not cancel out or overshadow the vast majority of the other posts that are directed squarely at the TV coverage, not the tourney.  :P

Just to clear up any doubt, I am in fact bashing the tournament. (Well, at least the television production of it.)

I can respect the charitable contribution the tournament makes. But not one of these "entertainers" would show if it weren't for some guaranteed face time on the tube. You must admit it is impossible to enjoy the likes of chris Berman hacking around Pebble Beach.

The days of this being a gathering of Bing"s closest chronies playing along side the touring professionals is long gone.

And yes Rick, you're correct-Phil Harris was not very funny. He was good natured, but not blessed with an ability to deliver humor. He was kept in the shadows until he was about the last one standing

Adam,

Let's say for the sake of charity(as I have no concern for the local economy, I think it would do just fine without this event)

Joe,

Being a Michigan resident I find your dismissal of "the local economy" quite strange. The raison d'etre for bringing the The Crosby to Pebble Beach from Ranch Santa Fe post war, was the idea of Ted Durein, a local newspaper man. January and February were notoriously slow months in the tourist economy of the Monterey Peninsula and the tournament became an instant success.  The rather large sums of money that flowed into local charities came later.

At one time our schoolchildren were given time off to run the hot-dog stands but somehow down the line, the Pebble Beach Corporation seemed to have usurped that cash generating operation.

Bob,

Is the economy there today at all resembling the post war economy that you reference? If so, my mistake.

I don't have any specifics as the whether the economy and tax base in the Monterey area are similar to what Michigan is experiencing.

I do feel much better about my swing after watching Chris Berman.

While it is great to see PB, the aerials of CPC really make my mouth water.

I think I've figured out what needs to be done from reading this thread. Kings Putter should be broadcast on The Golf Channel with Danny Gans as an on course reporter.

I think it has potential.

But Bob, you've got to love all the kiddie korps kops that are directing traffic around here.  I've almost gotten into three accidents from one of them telling me to go while another one told someone else to turn left in front of me.

For those who don't know, the local Junior Police Patrol made up of kids who are interested in being police officers are used to direct traffic and stop us going done the roads by the golf courses where we might disturb a player at 5:30 AM. ::)

Joe,

Its easy to look at the immediate area along 17 mile drive and say why do this people need charity money?

But Salinas and various other communities are very close by and they are in need of help.

Kalen,

My comment very well could be off base, but I don't have any idea who or where the recipients of the charity money are. I'm not suggesting there isn't any need for charity there, it just isn't apparent and it hasn't been clarified.

Even still, if the TV ratings matter(and I am sure they do) they ought to make an attempt to present a palatable event for viewing. Or, maybe as Adam suggests, it is palatable for all but 1500 potential viewers.

Maybe if all of us bought more garlic they wouldn't have to televise this event..... :)

Joe,

I am not sure of the relative economic disparities between out two states but I do know that the service industry here is heavily dependent on Hispanics. Salinas, some twenty miles from Carmel has a large Hispanic population and according to a recent in article in the WSJ, has the most unaffordable housing in the country. The tournament does help.

Joe,

Here is the organization that oversees the charity monies:
http://www.montereypeninsulafoundation.org/. You can do a little digging around there to see who specifically benefits.

As for the tournament I think its great.  Just wish it was more telecasted golf and less one-ups-manship antics by a small minority.  If you really want to apply the pressure, best to let AT&T know you aren't happy with the presentation of the tournament on TV and let them apply the pressure to CBS and TGC.  Its sure worked for the Masters.

The Foundation which puts on the tournament contribute generously to the local high schools, in terms of scholarships  and money to fund programs , not just golf.  My school, PGHS, received $ for site improvemnts as well as 4 students getting  over $20,000 in financial aid last year alone.  Even in PG we have a large segment of the service industry.  Over 50% of the homes in PG are rentals.
I proposed to our Board that we take the week of the At&T as our Presidents Day break, which would allow our students to complete many community service hours as well as allowing every organization on campus to do fundraising activities.  We could park cars on our campus and almost pay for our sports programs for the year.

Since we are discussing Pebble Beach maybe someone can explain this one to me. Mark O'Meara has 5 wins at Pebble yet he is playing this week in the Indian Masters. Is there a good reason or is he getting a kick-ass appearance fee?

I really don't mind the celebrities at all - besides Danny Gans. I wouldn't even mind him so much if they simply showed one or at most two jokes. The minimal coverage of him yesterday, however, caused nightmarish flashbacks to last year's insanity. I cannot imagine one single person, even his parents, his wife or significant other, anyone, who was not on the verge of throwing something at their TV. As for the other celebs, it's a once a year thing (twice if you count the Hope).

At least this way we'll see Pebble on CBS's HD coverage, as opposed to in 2010, when we see Pebble in NBC's disasterous, 1 in  5 HD cameras, oversaturated colors coverage.

If any posters are going to be there, post where you'll be and what you're wearing and I'll look for you!

Sam,

O'Meara was in Dubai last week so the flight to India probably looked more convenient (plus the appearance fee).

It's not even that I mind seeing impressionists. If Frank Caliendo were getting the airtime that CBS gives Danny Gans, I wouldn't complain.

But Danny's claim to fame is being named "Las Vegas Entertainer of the Year" ten years in a row. Who won the year before he did, Phyllis Diller? But seriously, folks...many times I'd have no idea who he's supposed to imitating if he didn't tell us in advance. Yesterday he was supposedly imitating John Travolta when he uttered that excruciating line about addressing his ball with a stamp. I do a better Travolta. I'm guessing Tiger does a better Travolta. Hell, Alan Greenspan probably does a better Travolta.

Las Vegas has a lot to answer for.

Coincidentally - or not - I was just talking to Alan last night and he remarked that he does indeed do a better Travolta. He did feel mine was lacking, however.

Thanks for the pick-me-up, Shiv!
