Pebble Beach & The Golf Channel...
« on: February 07, 2008, 06:57:09 PM »
Just in case you missed it, a note for your TV viewing...

With the ongoing TV writer's strike, the Golf Channel smelling viewership, will televise the 1st round, and I'm sure the 2nd round from Pebble Beach at 8:30pm Eastern. Check the local listings for your area.

Tom -

The Golf Channel shows the first 2 rounds multiple times at night for most tournaments.

On the West Coast, we get the live feed and then a 5:30 PM and 9:30 PM replay ... followed by the Euro Tour replay ...

Isn't this just like the other events as they are pushing the "PGA Tour in Primetime" throughout the year?

You may want to put your sunglasses on in case they show a bunker. Man, are those bunkers at Pebble white.

This is the kind of TV that you can watch with the volume down.  My 5 year old daughter was mesmerized by the water.

A buddy of mine is playing Pebble next week and I am insanely jealous!!!

I do feel much better about my swing after watching Chris Berman.

While it is great to see PB, the aerials of CPC really make my mouth water.

Am I the only one who would like to stuff a sock in Kelly Tilghman's mouth. Can't the golf channel get a better lead commentator?

she is definitely average at best Jack...i.e., you would think there must be somebody better out ther

i'm starting to find Faldo pretty annoying too...he talks way too much and oftentimes isn't saying anything worthwhile

I actually like the crews that did Nationwide and Canadian Tour events. Grant Boone and those guys aren't to bad.

Will someone please pass on that NOT everyone loves Raymond.

I hate this golf tournament. These fools muck up a perfectly good golf course year after year. I want to go throw up now

I've just been watching the "Prime Time" coverage and I'm trying to figure out if they won't show a leaderboard because of the lack of start power.
I think Pebble is awesome but Jones, Mallinger, Thatcher, Adamonis, and Williamson would certainly make me think I've just tuned into the Nationwide Tour.
I guess we'll have to listen to more of Kelly and see Costner's short game some more.

Here's an idea, don't watch if you don't like the lack of quality players in the field.  There is a reason why hardly any of the top players play this event, it's a made for TV special that is more about the Pro Am portion of the event.  They're simply carrying on a tradition which is a lot of what golf is about.  I for one can't watch it because of the reason's you've listed.

Nicklaus and Irwin and Miller played this almost every year in their primes, and won it as well. Guess the only way Woods plays it again is when the U.S. Open is scheduled the same year.
Of course, it is quite a few years since Der Bingle was hosting the Clambake.

Please, I beg of you... NO MORE DANNY GANS!

I recommend everyone cutting and pasting this and sending it to TGC and CBS.

And by everyone, I mean everyone on the planet with email capabilities.

You guys are tough...I mean, what was the line he had about addressing the ball, but couldn't find a stamp to fit?

You guys are just jealous that you aren't that funny...... ::)

How much does Gans get paid for that act? I bet I could beat him at golf and humor....maybe that makes me the stupid one.

Any agents out there?

Having recently switched to the Dish and received an HD DVR, I highly recommend it for any of you who have a problem with a particular aspect of TGC's coverage of this event [to wit, Danny Gans].  As soon as I hear his name, and KT was very good about warning me, I grabbed the remote and fast forwarded right through.

After watching some, if not most, of the amateurs' performance on the greens, especially the way they step next to the hole to fish their tap-ins out, I can see why Tiger doesn't like this event.  Can you imagine trying to putt on a green after Chris Berman's fat ass has been tromping around the hole?  Talk about Dave Pelz's "lumpy donut!"  Most people, however, have learned that you don't step right next to the hole to remove your ball.

Smols, You make an excellent point about using one's head to overcome TV's low points.

The vitriol expressed above is telling, but the reality is this tournament has many different atmospheres and attitudes.

First off, the charity angle is hard to HATE. Then there's the uniqueness of the tournament. Nowhere else is this format used, and not one Am would ever turn down an invitation. The boost to the local economy is significant in an otherwise off season period.

Those who hate it from the outside looking in, is just silly. Only surpassed by those on the inside who bitch and moan, showing their under appreciation for the origins of the clambake.

Adam,

I can appreciate your viewpoint as I believe you have had firsthand experience with this event.

Let's say for the sake of charity(as I have no concern for the local economy, I think it would do just fine without this event) we should all see this event for what it is....charity. Does that mean that the production and presentation of the event to the TV viewer couldn't be improved? Is Danny Gans and all the other yucksters there donating their fee to charity? What about the Pro's? Should I watch the event on TV, even if I find it a miserable viewing experience, so that the ratings will be inflated (thus increasing advertising revenue in the future)?

No vitriol, but there is an expectation of high value of production when it comes to this history rich event. I'm not seeing it.

I'll watch if you think it will contribute to the charities in any way, however small that may be.

I'm too young (amazingly) to really know this for a fact, but I'd guess that not all of Phil Harris's gags were all that funny, either.

Not letting Danny Gans (gag) off the hook here, but I don't believe this event has deteriorated. It's just being covered in a different way.

Adam,

I will 2nd Joes comments here.  The only angst being expressed here is about the TV coverage, not the event itself. If the networks TGC/CBS could put on a telecast that matches the classiness of the event, area, courses, and people involved then I doubt anyone would have a beef.

I enjoy good humor just as much as the next guy, but seriously if I was playing along side Gans and had to put up with 6 hours of that crap, I'd be tempted to punch him in the face.

Joe, My overall point was to judge the merits of the entire tournament,
by the television coverage, would be more than a bit myopic.

Hate the player not the game.
