pretty easy answer....TPC Sawgrass

Not Merion, Chip?  Kidding...I'm only kidding...

I'd reiterate Jay's thoughts about Sawgrass although my experience is limited.

For me...Huntsville.

I also nominate Tot Hill Farm.  I don't even consider it golf.  It's pretty to look at, but to play it again, no thanks!!!

How about El Diablo in Florida or Pinehills in Boston, both courses, the Jones and he Nicklaus?

Pebble Beach.  At $475 (or whatever it is) I guess it's more like a one night stand with a hot hooker.

I am deeply surprised at how a number of highly-ranked courses have been mentioned, and more than once. It is obviously an individualistic belief, but for those raters on GCA, do these comments give you pause in considering how you might rate a course?

Thundering Waters, the Daly course near Niagara falls.  But Philip, I must sort raise a gentle objection to the premise here as I personally cannot adequately judge a course from just one visit.  I know frequently my opinion can change dramatically after the 2nd or 3rd trip around a place.

But Joe, the premise is there a course you've played that you walk off it knowing that you won't play it again and that you would tell a friend that if they did to only do so once...

TPC changes quite often so you can go back every two years, sort of a regular "one night stand" Ryder Cup type of course

I don't understand TPC Sawgrass as an answer...  It's an excellent golf course which requires excellent shotmaking and imagination around the greens.

For those who have mentioned it - what makes it a "one-nighter"?

Tom P:  Would you really pay $300 to hit those tee shots again?

Tom:

Not that your point needs strengthening, but, I think Old Head is actually closer to $435USD  :o  for 18 holes at the moment.  295 Euros.

I agree that unless cost is included as a factor I wouldn't include Pebble Beach or TPC Sawgrass. Just looking at the golf courses I think they're every bit as good as advertised, just too expensive to play more than once (or once in awhile).

If there's a one night stand course on the Monterey Peninsula its Spanish Bay.

Pebble Beach, stay in the Lodge, play an early round with a caddie, walk up to the spa and get a massage from Sasha, then consume too many ales on the Lodge deck during late afternoon lunch-highly recommended.

I can think of a bunch.
PGA West
Pebble, only because of the price.
Spyglass
Bay Harbor
Better stop there.  Don't want to walk on too many toes.  It's almost like saying how many of your friends wives do you only want to look at once?

Jim that's a great point.  I think to many people a huge price point for little value is an enormous factor.  Alot of the courses listed have high prices, one exception (among others) being Tot Hill which is in the 50-60 range last I checked.

Chip, I have to disagree about Sawgrass..there's a lot of good architecture there and a really strong routing with interesting greens.  I play that one all the time.  But I can see how some people can get spooked by it...on occasion it eats me alive too.

i just personally don't like all the sharp edges.  i can see how some people like it, but i don't like holes that you can make either a 3 or an 8 all within inches of each other.  i think the recovery shot is a great part of the game and i don't think TPC-Sawgrass has that option on very many holes.

Chip,
Other than 17 I thought Sawgrass had quite a few recovery options; other than that though only #4 and 18 really seemed to have a hit it or else element (and #18 has a lot of room right if you're willing to make a bogey). I played terrible and managed to have recovery opportunities most of the day, I just couldn't take advantage of them.

Just another opinion, I can see people not liking that style as well.

Trilogy in La Quinta CA , played the skins game there a few times ...... we felt skinned playing it. Would agree with Newcastle near Seattle , both courses have great views and not much else .

The Falls at Lake Las Vegas.

Ouch. $275 for crappy layout, HORRIBLE conditions, and construction active on the sides of 14 of 18 holes.
