New Golf Course Developments in Bermuda
« on: December 27, 2007, 12:18:35 PM »
I have just had a discussion with one of my best friends who currently lives in Bermuda. He pointed out that Port Royal is being closed on Dec 31st 2007 for a year for total renovation of the course - some greens are changing shapes especially the 16th and the whole course is being extended to 7000 yards.

Also there is a new 18 hole course is to be developed north of Port Royal - developer is Jumeriah Estates from Dubai.

Also RTJ's St George short course is being redeveloped and redesigned by Nick Faldo.

Has anyone on GCA got any information or knowledge regarding this topic? I would appreciate this and forward it to my friend

Also Re St. George's:

This is the golf course that surrounds the long-disused former Club Med and Holiday Inn property. The course is to be revamped, considerably enlarged to a 6,000 yard course and redesigned by Nick Faldo, the three times winner of both the Open and US Masters Golf Championships. The course by his corporation Faldo Design is set to become the centerpiece of Bazarian International's proposed luxury hotel and resort development replacing the old Club Med resort. But a spokesman for the Premier said: the public would still have use of the golf course. The new golf course site will extend across land currently occupied by the 18-hole St George's public short course and over land alongside the ocean and Fort St Catherine's. Faldo Design's golf course architectural practice is dedicated to designing outstanding golf courses in every continent. Established in 1991, it has completed projects in 14 different countries and is currently working in North America, the Caribbean, Europe, Russia, Africa and Asia-Pacific. Many have won awards for being top golf courses.

Thanks Steve!

I was wondering how the hell they were going to get a 6000 yard 18 hole course at St George!. I have rode a moped through this quirky course. There are some steep climbs to half blind greens! Had a look at Google Earth there is a stretch of land south east of the course which would be ideal location for the new holes by the ocean. Bermuda is one of the most stunning places to go and play golf. I would definitely recommend it.

Wow!

Could be mighty interesting.  Here's to hoping Faldo keeps some of the quirk that has made St. George's a favorite for so many years.  I always felt that Bermuda needed like one more good regulation 18 to make it a world-class golf destination, and this could be it!  Interesting developments, I guess the Nicklaus rumors about the old Navy depot never went further than rumors...

Mid Ocean - clearly world class
Port Royal - very good, fun, scenic
Tuckers Point - hmm...good at times, wacky at others (and not a good wacky)
Riddell's - fun but super-short at about 5700 par 70.
Belmont - was being redone when I was there...the new pics make it look like a fun, nice place for a game
St. George's - a wild ride, mostly par 3s, where one sees what seems like all of Bermuda....the cruise ships, the rolling, lush landscape, a secluded cove looking out to sea, a cement rain catchment, the small fishing village, the fort, the huge former hotel....etc... Sad to see it go, but it was only worth one play really...

So the new rota will have two very good and challenging 18s, one where the jury is still out (TP could be in the challenging 18 category with some maturity), and three short quirky fun courses.  Not to mention a brand new 18.  Sounds great!
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....
