Perry Maxwell in Tulsa ?
« on: December 18, 2007, 10:47:26 AM »
I came across Cherokee hills ,which appears to be  an nicely routed Maxwell  18 holer  near a Tulsa casino. Photos seem to  reveal some  nice greens  and interesting elevation changes. has anyone  played here ?

thanks

Mark,

Cherokee Hills is a Tripp Davis course with some of Perry Maxwell's holes left over from one of his early courses (circa 1925), it had many names over the years Spunky Creek being one of them. The original Maxwell course was a very good routing and had some very cool holes but was in horrible shape after years of neglect. Enter the Cherokee tribe who buy the course, rip out the front 9 to build a Casino and then add 9 or 10 new holes to the remaining Maxwell holes. Tripp has done some renovations/restorations of Maxwell courses around Oklahoma and tried to channel Maxwell for the new holes. I have heard good things about it but I have yet to see it up close.  Chris Clouser can provide more details.

Mark,

Craig has the big points of the story highlighted.  There is a little more that I believe is some hearsay and some truth.  If you want to discuss give me a call.

I was never able to get to the site before the work by Tripp.  But I did see the revised course during grow-in on a trip to Tulsa.  It was quite impressive and seemed to carry some Maxwell characteristics to it.  If I get back down to Oklahoma this spring it is on my must-see list.  It is something I recommend to anyone when they ask me about places to see in Oklahoma that are little unknown.

Tripp has also worked at Muskogee and Lawton in the state that are homes of Maxwell layouts.

I've had friends tell me that it's a very fun golf course, I've driven past it but never played. If I remember correctly it's where Daly played his PGA practice rounds this year.
