Topography
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I was thinking more along the lines of NO CARTPATHS and usually if there is an exception it will just be tee and green......
What does this tell you about cartpaths?

Maybe not so much about cartpaths, but that when designs don't have to consider cart traffic, they are better adapted to the site.

I'm still laughing, Tommy! Those three little dots at the end made me laugh even harder...

Mike - What do all great courses have in common? Their individuality and uniqueness.

WE all hate cart paths. But the answer is great greens.

You can have a great course with cart paths, but you cant have a great course with bad greens...

I'm going to pick on all of  you who said "great greens". What does that mean if you don't take into context the surrounds, the approach angles, the fairway terrain, etc? Without just saying something like "Oakmont has great greens...that's what I mean", what do you mean when you say "great greens"?

Crazy Joe,
He means that they have "great greens." As in "great," not just "good" greens, but "great" greens. Really "great" greens.

This is some really "great" architecture discussion going on. Really great stuff.

You got to love it, simply because its great.

Joe, he asked what was the ONE thing...so if I only get ONE answer, it is GREENS, without question.

I thought my "what they have in common is their individuality" was pretty clever, and a little cheeky. (I also thought Joe Hancock would make a "Life of Brian" joke, but I guess he's more mature nowadays ;D). So I'll try again:

Someone told me once that what most great courses have in common is that they're built on sandy soil.
