Ranking of Scottish courses...

near Turnberry, Western Gailes...etc.

In the Western Gailes thread, several posts have stated they would rank Western Gailes ahead of Turnberry Ailsa...This just seems beyond my comprehension.  I have only visited the area once, but felt the order should be:

1. Turnberry Ailsa
2. Prestwick
3. Western Gailes
4. Troon Old

everything else far behind...

What do you all think?  Is Western Gailes really better than the Ailsa?

Like Rich, I can't say any of these courses is better than the other.  If I have somewhere I didn't really mean it - slip of the tongue - the sun was in my eyes.  I can say that I prefer Western Gailes to Turnberry by a fair margin.  Prestwick and WG are more or less all square.  Troon is well behind the other three in preference.  In fact, I can't imagine ever paying to play Troon again.

  First of all, the sun must have been in your eyes 5 minutes ago...

Second, I agree my overall experience at Troon was poor...the attitude, lack of decent caddie...having to pay to play the Portland course...all of this was POOR.  BUT, the course was very good.  Now, if I went back to Scotland tomorrow, I wouldn't schedule Troon but someday I could see going back.  If you notice, I ranked Troon behind the others as well.

Was there something lacking for you at the Ailsa ...I thought it was one of the best courses of my life (top 5-10)

Who is better looking, Halle Berry, Heather Locklear or Heidi Klum?  Sorry guys, all of these attempts to "rank" courses as being better than another are an exercise in futility.  Some like blonds, some like brunettes.  They're all GREAT (I mean the links courses across the pond too).  I'd like to give each of them the best 15 seconds of their life.

The Ailsa course has some of the greatest shot values in addition to spectacular scenery. The back tee shot on 9-Bruce's castle is one of the great tee shots in championship golf. Is there a more stunning view of alinks than that from the dining room in the evening? With the spa it is one of the places your wife can get her butt rubbed while you get your butt kicked!

My ranking would be Turnberry & Prestwick followed well behind by Troon and Western Gailes.  

I've only played each once, and Turnberry twice on the same day.  I haven't seen many elite courses but Turnberry is in my top 3-5, however as previously said mostly for the seaside holes (although I love #s 5, 16 & 17.  The opener and closer do little for me.  

I love Prestwick, quirk and all.  On Rich's "Member" thread, I'm not sure what he means but I could happily play Prestwick every day from now on.  

Troon had a few more memorable holes for me than WG (though I loved 6 & 7 at WG), but neither course stood out.  They were both early in my trip, and I sure didn't play well either.  

Frankly, once around a course isn't nearly enough for me to take it all in.  But whenever my next trip to Scotland occurs, I won't even think about hitting the west coast again until I can visit the Muirfield area and northern gems.
