Archies getting top 5 sites ever first time out
« on: November 08, 2007, 09:53:42 PM »
How many architects got to work on one of the best five sites they had ever seen on the first job they work one.

First answer

Ron Whitten.

Any others?

Chris,

Do we know he didn't see five better sites? Some have argued with me here that Pine Valley was not that good of a site.

My impression was that Ron's first job was on Erin Hills. Do I have to modify it to his second job? :)

It is not even his second job.  Don't you think the man has earned a bit of respect?

Chris,

Well, I know he cherry picked that site because it was so good for golf, and before the course was constructed A.W. Tillinghast wrote "I have gone over the ground and I have never seen a more interesting stretch of golf country."

That's enough for me.

It is an incredible site for golf.

Does Bobby Jones count?

I would say that ANGC is not a good site for golf.  It is too hilly.

I THINK Ron just meant it was one of the top 5 sites he'd ever seen before there was a course on it -- he's seen a lot under construction and in planning while touring with other architects.  If he thinks Erin Hills is one of the top five sites ever, he's nuts.  I wouldn't even put Pacific Dunes in the top five sites ever and Erin Hills isn't close to it.

Tom,

What about Erin Hills would not make it a top 5 site.  It did produce an interesting, dramatic easily walkable course.  I know it doesn't have water but I really did enjoy the view of the Monestary on the hill.  It must have had some truly great soil to have been running so fast in November and you have to admit that Wisconsin is a great place for growing grass.  I would like to know what is missing from the site that might preclude it from being a top five.  I do hope you would only count all of Bandon Resort as one.
