Doak's work at atlantic City CC
« on: November 06, 2007, 09:53:37 PM »
So I really enjoyed the golf at ACCC.  Doak, as you know did a redesign of some holes and spit shined some others.  I'll leave it to Tom to tell chapter and verse.  The lines of the shaping, the bunkering and the new holes worked well and fit nicely with the land.  The price tag is high...over $200..but I think its the best casino course I've played in the country.  Plus there's alot of history there.  NO amount of money can simply buy the long pedigree of that course.

Tom, someone I played with wanted to know "why did he make it so its so difficult to judge the distance on 15?" and I took a guees that maybe you just liked the lonely eminence o the flag waving against the backdrop of the ocean...but more than likely you were engaging in a little doctrine of deception.

Did you do anything to 17?  That was my favorite hole.  What in particular of Flynn's did you keep?  What might you have modified a little?

I tried your shortcut on number 10...it works and I like it..."take down the gallery ropes" - Lon Hinkle.

Re:Doak's work at atlantic City CC - is there a little inwood in it?

Oh...and I forgot to ask:

Does anyone else feel that ACCC reminds then more than a little of Inwood Country Club...same kinda thing where a bunch of guys did the design as a collective work over time...1897 vs. 1901...Doak does the restoration/redesign...anybody see where the two kinda look alike a little?

Here's some pix of ACCC:

i am a regular there so a bit of bias - it is a beauty but they have experienced some recent conditioning issues over the last couple of months

Interesting that  mentioned  Inwood as ACCC in some aspects reminds me of Inwood's neighbour -The Rockaway Hunt Club - in fact I hosted a Rockaway member this summer and he felt the same way.

17 is a beauty - in some ways reminds me 8 at Maidstone - ie semi blind green / hidden bunker and a bailout to the left.

16 i probably my favorite hole on the course - a gem as are all the holes on the backside by the marshland

Ah...so some people do see a little similarity with Inwood!

And yes, 17 is both a stunner and a great strategic hole with nice interior green contours.  What about the front, Gerry?  The shortcut on 10?

Jay/Gerry,

Geez...love most of AC but really hated 17 and not much of a fan of 18 either.

Tom Doak and I discussed this one some months back on here, talking about the limitations he was working with given the (at the time) new practice center eating up much of the real estate of the original 2 finishing holes, as well as needing a place to dump fill, if memory serves.  I tried to use the "Search" function here to find that thread to no avail.

My major complaint with 17 is both aesthetic and functional.   Here you have a site without a single dune (it's a bay, not an ocean!) and all of a sudden you have this obviously man-made minefield of mounds on 17, and a pretty bland, boring hole to boot!

I agree that it doesn't look like the "low country" feel of the rest of the course, but its a pleasant surprise and I like the look.  I thought 18 green had some great contours to it and I liked the tempting corner to try to cut...I resisted the temptation to bite off too much and pulled it left instead to boot.  I agree it's not a pretty as some of the others, but its a solid hole.

What were the holes that you did like Mike?  Did you try the short cut on 10?

 Jay,

I liked many holes but I will pick two --#3 , for the approach shot and the green complex, and --#11 ( I think that's correct).a par four with a slanting rise in the landing area and a long approach with interesting runup possibilities.

jay - i love the entire place - course, clubhouse, ambience / mix of long and short holes / flow / 1st tee -practice putting green combo / the bells / the range / the aridondack chairs behind the 9th green / the rakes.

the only feature that is missing is that they had to replace the old thin wood flagsticks as they kept bbeaking.
when the wind blows on crisp fall afternoon it is a good as it gets

i try to do the daily double of pine valley / atlantic city cc  followed the extraordinary chef vola for dinner at least a couple of times a year.
