Leaving room for Changes
« on: November 04, 2007, 02:45:49 PM »
I have been reading all the post about the changes at Bethpage-Black. It got me thinking, do architects leaves places open so changes can be made in the future?  Its hard to assume that Mr. Tillinghaust had enough foresight to know people would hit the golf ball as far as they do today.  Did some of the ODG leave room on the course so changes could be made in the addition of new tees?  Do modern day architects leave room for changes better understanding how technology has changed the game so courses can 'keep up with the Jones' so to speak?'

MacKenzie's third principle was

There should be little walking between greens and tees and the course should be arranged so that, in the first instance, there is always a slight walk fowards from the green to the next tee; then the holes are sufficiently elastic to be lengthened in the future if necessary.

He definitely thought about it. I would imagine most of the ODGs thought about it as well having had experience of technilogical changes such as the move to the haskell ball and the change from hickory to steel or others.

There are painters who transform the sun to a yellow spot, but there are others who with the help of their art and their intelligence, transform a yellow spot into the sun.

I was thinking of it a little differently.  When designing a course do architects think "hey thats a great site for a tee, but we won't build it now, we will just let it be and if the hole needs to be changed, we have that option."

We have been building a few new tees at the course I work at.  They are fitting in well, but I wouldn't say it was planned for these tees to sit in these areas.

Sean,

Love the new tee on 5. On 7, I am reserving judgement.  Any issues with Fazio's group now being able to see the cartpath now on 7.  We know how they hate that.

Any thoughts to blowing up 17 greensite and starting over? ;)

Have you seen the complete finished product on #7?  (All but the big tree of course.)  I think it turned out awesome.
17 Green site will remain unchanged, I'd be for changing the bunkers.

12 Tee should be a good one too.

What the hell kind of an insane tee did they put in on #5?

That back tee is crazy enough as it is.

So now its 490ish?

And 12 needs a new tee, no more hitting 7-iron into a par-5.

Blowing up 17 green would good too.  Theres definitely a lot more that hole could have been...

No the new tee makes it play about 390ish.
The only time you have ever hit seven iron on that hole was to punch out of the trees.

390ish?
Thats it?

And you did hit a 7-iron to that green last time we played.
Last time I played the course I hit 5-iron into a slight wind from 210 and two putted for birdie.
Of course, I hit 7-iron in for my third shot when playing 3 into a big wind.  Thats a great hole.

Yes I have and it does look good. The angle is different, which I like, I just don't know if it was necessary except for the kids that might play their during a qualifier.

What are you doing to 12 tee?  Making it bigger I hope, and getting rid of the tree left.
