Relocating the clubhouse
« on: October 10, 2007, 09:47:40 AM »
A friend is writing a piece on clubs that have relocated their cluhouse and, as a consequence, renumbered the holes on their course.

Does anyone know of places where that happened?

Eau Claire Golf and Country Club

Eau Claire, Wis.

One of John Conley's "Hidden Gems."

(The clubhouse move necessitated not only renumbering, but building a few [?] new holes.)

Hershey Country Club moved from the old Milton Hershey mansion in 1970 when they added the east course.  Subsequently, that changed three holes on the original west course and renumbered them all.

NGLA, although it was the construction of the original clubhouse not a relocation of a prior one.

Bob I don't know all the details but the Addington was originally to have a disused railway carriage as clubhouse.  It was intended to have this on a high part of the course (between 5 and 6?) but they couldn’t get it up the hill.  Hence the current routing with it’s somewhat awkward routing for no 1.

There’s something about this in the Centurions of Golf.

Terrible move.
I get it, you are mad at the world because you are an adult caddie and few people take you seriously.

Excellent spellers usually lack any vision or common sense.

I know plenty of courses that are in the red, and they are killing it.

PCC came to mind, but did they renumber holes?

Yes, Bob.  The changes made to the final hole because the clubhouse moved up the hill caused a great hole to be lost and a mediocre one in its place.  They also made a significant change in the routing progression forcing an enlargement of the old 16th green, which became the first.

Original     Current
1             14
2             15
3             16
4             17
5             18 (somewhat)
6             10
7             11
8             12
9             13
10           4
11           5
12           6
13           7
14           8
15           9
16           1
17           2
18           3 (scene of Snead's demise in 1939)

Bob:

Camden Country Club in Camden, SC relocated their clubhouse.

The original course was built by Walter Travis in 1923 and was owned by a resort hotel.  In 1938, Donald Ross was engaged to renovate the course and grass the greens (originally sand).  The best evidence indicates that Mr. Ross did little tinkering with the routing, but made significant changes in the green contours and the greenside bunkering.

Soon after WWII, the hotel went out of business.  The golf course property was purchased by a group of wealthy residents (headed by William F. Buckley) who leased it to the club for a nominal amount.  The clubhouse was moved to an existing old farmhouse sited above what was then the #15 green.  The hole sequencing was changed as follows:

Original                  Current
1                           13
2                           14
3                           15
4                           16
5                           17
6                           3
7                           4
8                           5
9                           6
10                         7
11                         8
12                         9
13                         1
14                         2
15                         18
16                         10
17                         11
18                         12

The original routing did not return to the clubhouse on each nine while the current sequencing does (somewhat awkwardly).  Interestingly, the original routing had difficult par 3s for both #9 and #18.
::)
Bet I gave you more info than you wanted.......

Golspie (north of Dornoch) relocated its clubhouse much further inland due to coastal erosion. What was the first hole is now the third hole.

Riverton (Ross)

Actually, now that I think of it my own club, Gulph Mills G.C (Ross) in Philly had something of a resequencing from the original clubhouse to the one Ross planned in his routing that was built a few years after the course was opened.

Flossmoor CC in Flossmoor, IL.

Old clubhouse burned down (twice).  I believe today's #4 was yesterday's #1.

Hartford GC actually migrated their entire course piece by piece to the north of Albany Ave., then moved the clubhouse, then added a third nine.

Riverton CC in NJ, just east of Philadelphia, moved their clubhouse from a dry county to a wet one on the same Ross course, in the process disrupting the flow of the routing as they shifted from one end to another.

Didn't Princes relocate its clubhouse and renumber holes in the 60's or 70's?

The old abandoned clubhouse is still standing at the end of the 3rd (?) hole. When exactly was the old clubhouse closed? Why wasn't it torn down?

Bob:

Pine Needles originally played out of the resort hotel located behind the current second tee. That hotel has changed hands several times and is now a retirement facility. When Peggy Kirk Bell and her husband bought the course, they built the current clubhouse, and now play begins on what was originally the 18th hole and finishes on the old 17th. I think I have that right. If not, maybe Brad will correct me.

Jim, that is correct.

Add Raynor's Lookout Mountain GC to the list of courses that moved their clubhouse -- or used a temporary facility down on the northeast corner, I think the direction is, by the present 3rd green where the original clubhouse was supposed to be sited. The current 3rd hole played as No.1, with the current No. 2 hole playing as 18 -- until the existing clubhouse was created years after the place opened.

Brad -

The view from the old clubhouse at Lookout Mtn. would have been spectacular. Do you know why it was moved?

Let me re-ask my question from above:

What was the story with the Princes clubhouse relocation?

It occurs to me that the Broadmoor is one the rare cases where holes were renumbered because they couldn't move the clubhouse. ;D
