How Much Does Your Home Course Strategy Vary?
« on: September 21, 2007, 11:31:19 AM »
I probably play 80% of my golf on one course.  I always use driver on 7 of the 14 driving holes but vary club selection on the other 7 depending on wind direction and confidence in my swing.  Upwind on these choice holes I tend to use driver to keep my ball flight down.  When I am swinging badly I am more likely to use a 3-metal or iron off the tee.  I don't really take hole location into account at the tee although there are some holes where I probably should.

Interested to know how others vary their strategy on the course they play most frequently.

Phil,
Not too often, maybe a tactical decision due to weather, sore body parts, etc., but it's more like going from Plan A to Plan B when I couldn't get Plan A to work.

But, I find that playing to the green from somewhere other than where I originally chose never loses its appeal, and I'd bet you can say the same for WCC.

Jim,

What do you hit off the tee on 9?  In the days when I played Hotchkiss (more than 30 years ago) I either hit a 1-iron or if I felt confident in my swing a driver.  I think with today's technology the pond is reachable with a driver.

At my old home course it changed with the location of the cups and pretty dramatically at that!  Now days, get it in the middle, get it on, put it in, with the rare need to get left or right to open up a pin location.  Very rare though.

I am lucky to have two home courses, one traditional and a faux links. One the traditional course I have very few strategy decisions other than changing clubs. Angles don't mean much and there are only two tee changes which affect carrying hazards. On the faux links the strategy changes are dominant depending on where they set the hole.

Phil,
It's 245 from the front tee to the pond, 280 from the very tip. There are those woods in the 'first' fairway to consider and they are 200 from the front, 245 from the tip.
I'll hit either a 4, 5 or 6 iron from the blue and a hybrid 3 or 4 wood from the tip.

For ya-has, I will try and hit a driver from the tip around the corner on occasion, but not if I need to finish the hole.  ;D

My tactics vary on:

4 of 9 holes on the front nine
8 of 9 on the back

Verifies my general impression that the back is better
