I noticed a 60 in qualifing at Black Creek in Chatt, the Brian Silva course.  That is pretty good anywhere, any set up.

Steve Kline,
I posted way earlier that Bandon Trails will be the course that decides which players will make the match play portion. I stand by that. Take the time to walk the course backwards before you decide how to play any hole. And do not miss #2 to the right.
From the game tonite anyone from Cincinnati shouldn't have any problem handling anything related to Oregon state.

I know I haven't seen the hole but I bet almost every single PGA tour pro would go for the green. They have so much confidence in their short games they think they can handle anything. It seems like most go for the 10th at Riviera, or the 4th at TPC Boston (not near as much trouble it sounds like) or the 17th at Oakmont. Rarely do these guys lay up on short par 4s.

Since I will only be playing the course in stroke play I'll probably lay up. The key the first two rounds is not to make doubles or worse. You can recover from bogeys.

It would be interesting to see.  I have a feeling this is a short par 4 where they'd lay up - you'll see - the target area near the green is TINY and the penalty for missing is pretty huge.  They know they can make 3 going 5 iron + SW.... they can get it on the green in the wrong place and have a lesser chance of making 3... the only reason I see them going for it is if they really need a 2.

But I could be wrong.  A tour pro I am not.

Your reasoning for laying up though would also be that taken by a tour pro, would it not?

Huck,

Don't you think that for top players the play is to drive it just short of that green? Whatever club does that would be the choice of play.........

Sean:

I don't know.. just short of the green meaning to the left of the bunker is a VERY tiny area to try to hit, with lots of danger.  Just short of the green right and below the bunker leaves a damn hard shot, one they sure wouldn't want.  In the bunker is no bargain either given how deep it is.  I really don't see that as a percentage play... it really seems to me laying back to where they have a shot they can spin will mean 4 max, good chance at 3 for a good player.  I have to believe that's how they'd play it.

But then again maybe Steve is right and they have such huge faith in their short games that they don't see below right as a tough shot... but man, 30-50 yards, tough to spin off very tight grass, have to get high, tiny margin of error...if that's not a tough shot the game really has become too easy.

TH,

I just see that green as being so difficult to hit and hold from the right with a full shot that something close  to the green(but short for sure) can be bounced in safely. But you are right.  50 yards from the right is dead.

I guess I just can't see a high percentage of shots NOT ending up in that 50 yards from the right dead zone, given the slope... and of the ones that don't go down there, a fair percentage are going to go left into the bushes... Thus my thinking that it's a pretty darn risky play to try to attack that green or even get close to it.

But then again, if that 50 yard shot from the right isn't dead based on one's skill, it does change everything.

I noticed a 60 in qualifing at Black Creek in Chatt, the Brian Silva course.  That is pretty good anywhere, any set up.

His name is Steve White.

Especially since he beat the next best guy by 8 shots.  And he was from Wyoming so he wasn't someone who knew the course well.

I checked with the guy on the Mid-Am Committee from Wyoming.   White has qualified for the Mid-Am and the Pub Links a few times.  He also shot something like -10 for 54 holes to finish runner up at the Wyoming Am this year.  Obviously he can play a little.

I just assumed that 60 was a typo.  Guess not.  WOW!

Andrew and I both missed by two shots. We had 11 bogies between us which just doesn't cut it at a 6,550 yard course, even one with difficult greens.

I'm off to go, uh, forget about it.
