Daley Pulls A Trevino
« on: August 15, 2007, 10:13:45 AM »
Dick, not John.

In a pathetic example of gamesmanship, Dick Daley planted a rather large snake just off the first tee at Erin Hills yesterday.  Fortunately, the golf gods frowned on such a ploy and the first hole was handily won by yours truly, who went on to a 4-up Ran style "crushing" on the front.  Of course, as a diplomatic Southerner, I felt compelled to drop the back nine 4-down to square the match, including an intentional 3-jack at the 18th.

I am a little embarrassed that I whispered "McConkey" as Dick lined up a short putt at the 2nd, which he missed as expected.

How about a critique of Erin Hills?  The photos in Golf Digest looked pretty good although I was a bit put off by the mound inside a bunker on the right side of that one hole.  That looked very manufactured, to say the least.

Let's see, could there be a Daley-Hendren rematch at the Dixie Cup?  ;D

I'm looking forward to hearing Bogey's take on Erin Hills in person tomorrow up at Lawsonia.  I'm about 50:50 whether or not I'll make the trip over to play this year or wait until next.

Cheers,
Brad

Did you check an ID...I didn't think Daley Dick would pay $150 for a round of golf.

Do they discount the pull cart to boot?  I am glad to hear that they give a nice discount to the locals.

John,
Pay for golf? I didn't think anyone on GCA actually paid for golf.   ;)

Joking aside, I am surprised GCA's favorite Cheesehead coughed up $125 for a round of golf, must be getting soft.  ;D

On top of that he tried to pay for dinner at the Alpine Retreat - a hidden gem that we stumbled upon and highly recommend.

Barney, we walked and pulled.

As for the course, I'm smoking it over, but am convinced that it's a must see.

Biggest surprise:  I finished with the same ball I started with contrary to my expectations and shot a ton consistent with expectations.   More later.

Did he do his trademark Sutton Bay Shuffle -- wandering into the deep vegetation with an iron club in hand, tapping any nearby rocks?

Sorry, I didn't see Mr Hendren's understated interpretation of events regarding gamesmanship yesterday, until this late hour.

I did begin the discussion of my take on EH on the EH vs CB according to Whitten thread.

Mike has curiously omitted that I also saved his life yesterday when I had to catch him from what would have probably been a fall that would have minimally broken his neck.  After walking to mutual near exhaustion, and even after a refreshing (not mutual) shower, on our way out to dinner, Mike's bermuda shorts pocket caught a knob on the back of a bench sitting precariously at the edge of the brick veranda, down two steps to a brick patio.  As if in slow motion, a series of ever more lost balance from the 'knob in the pocket' pulling back on the intended forward down stepping of Mr Mike, caused an avalanche of Tennessee mountain man to crumble.  Had I not caught him, steadied him, and saved him from this fall, it would have probably been his last GCA.com outting!

AS for the Daley line of rationality of cost being crossed to play EH, I was under my limit.  I also bought two fine shirts in their quaint pro shop with the most reverent of Irish Christian muzak playing in the backgorund (inspired by the holy cathedral that overlooks the clubhouse) from a lass who- I kid you not- was about the most beautiful long red tight curled hair with azzure eyes, one could possible script in a Hollywood calling for a quintessential Irish woman to go with the Erin Hills theme.  It was as if she were the most beautiful lead dancer of Riverdance.  Yes, the miserly RJ did indeed pony up some ping in those environs.  ;) ;D

So to sum up... I saved Hendren from the vicious baby rattler bite at Rustic Canyon by pushing him out of the way of the charging viper at his heal;  I intercepted the hissing and feisty grass snake (I never saw one rear back as if in a cobra-like strike position, really); and I caught and righted the fatally free fallen man mountain Mike -pulling him from the clutches of certain death or crippling injury.

What do you guys want from me... congressional medal of honor heroism?  :o ;) ;D ;D

Dick,
Now you've gone and done it. All the guys that were hedging about the golf will now be beating a path to the pro shop. Or you are still frugal but have been hired on as EH's marketing director in exchange for free golf. ;)
