Chequessett Yacht - Wellfleet MA - PHOTOS
« on: August 14, 2007, 09:40:48 PM »
Why am I posting photos of this totally obscure nine-holer on Cape Cod?

1. Can anyone tell me who designed this?

2. In a couple of years, two and perhaps three holes are being sold to Massachusetts as part of the Herring River reclamation project. There is plenty of high ground for new holes, and it should be an interesting project.

3. This is perhaps the one course in Mass that I have played that Bradford "baby-faced assassin" Tufts has not. Also, Sweeney requested these photos.

4. It's every bit as sporty and quirky as the much more eye-popping and "beloved on gca.com" Highland Links down the road in Truro. They make for a compelling pair of sandy, raw, super-old-school courses.

Decision time on the tee of the 234-yard first hole.

The basic, charming and peaceful par-three second.

Third hole - 220 yards to the end of the fairway, 160 up the hill from there.

Fourth hole - very dramatic tee shot from the highest point on the course.

Fourth hole - approach up the hill and through a delightful saddle.

Fifth hole - sensational at 165 yards. I just might dork out here and proclaim this some sort of Eden hole.

Sixth hole - scarred from flooding, this hole is being sold to the Commonwealth. Cool green there.

Seventh hole - also being sold. True risk and reward on the creek plus a large and interesting tiered green.
I love that mean-spirited bunker on the right.

Man, that's one neat-looking green, that 1 green. I can't answer your designer question but I've got a couple back at you:
1. Do they have Wellfleets in the bar?
2. Does this mean we have to ask you not only about golf in Maine, but about golf in Massachusetts, too? (I thought Mainers had "a thing" about Massholes Massachusettusians...)

Mark,

A little fact that I have learned during my "heavy lifting" trips to Maine is that most Mainers consider Portland to be part of Northern Massachusetts. Combined with the fact that he used to live in Brooklyn, our Maine Guide is a bit of a fraud in the eyes of most Mainers!  ;)

Mr. Moore,

Looks like we have a 27 hole day coming up at Highland Links, Chequessett and Chatham Seaside Links.

Great photos, the course looks in great condition, and the afternoon wind should make it real interesting.
The course has golf architect Howard Maurer on board to design the new golf holes, to replace those to be sold off.   Maurer is a former Geoffrey Cornish understudy who is presently doing a fine remake of Miacomet on Nantucket.

Michael,

Thanks for the photos. From The Complete Guide to Golf on Cape Cod, Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard by Paul Harbor (1993), the course is attrbuted to Lorenzo Dow Baker in 1929. It says he was heir to the United Fruit Co. and built the course as an added attraction to the Chequessett Yacht Club; he paid a woping $62 for the land.

Any idea when the changes will take place? Have they picked someone for the project? Where are the pictures of 8&9 ?
