How fast would center court at Wimbledon stimp?
What kind of grass is used?
It looks like it takes a serious beating and holds up quite well ....

It's funny you say that, we were watching yesterday were wondering what it would stimp out at. I was thinking it might be fescue.

I found this link that won't go into stimp, but might allow for some of those familiar with turfgrass to speculate...

http://fielderschoice.stores.yahoo.net/design3.html

Here's some commentary specific to Wimbledon on the site:

"For cool season tennis courts, creeping bentgrass is usually the turfgrass of choice. At Wimbledon, however, the turfgrass is 70% 'Lorina" perennial ryegrass and 30% 'Barcrown' creeping red fescue. The average height of cut during the playing season is 8 millimeters (approximately 5/16"). There are 32 grass courts at Wimbledon, maintained by a crew of 14 full-time and 8 part-time employees. Needless to say, it is not an easy task to properly maintain top-quality grass tennis courts."

McEnroe mentioned that the courts were slower now than in his day...mentioning that this helped Nadal

The courts for the old Australian Open (when it was held on grass) looked like fairways from Royal Melbourne!

A friend is an AELTC member as well as being a good golfer, I'll ask him for an estimation of the centre court stimp speed.

Well we can make a pretty educated guess about the speed of the grass knowing that it's maintained at 5/16", can't we?

That's a little more than a quarter-inch, which sounds like a fairway maintained on the tight side.  How high is the fairway grass at ANGC?  What would its Stimpmeter reading be?

Take away 60% of the grass blades alive at ANGC and you have the turf at Wimbledon...round those estimates up...

I'm mostly impressed with the court's ability to take such a beating. There is a lot of "back and forth" over a pretty small patch of grass along the baseline . . .Do any of the supers here think that there is anything to learn from those who care for grass tennis courts?

With a last name like yours I understand.   There is a wonderful read titled "WIMBLETON A Celebration" by my favorite  JOHN McPHEE.  In it he spends prep time and tournament time with the keeper of Wimbleton.  Great deal of info and wonderful portrait of the keeper.  I especially liked the area where he critiqued players by how they dragged there feet while serving, thus tearing his turf.  There is a copy available now in 'BUYITNOW' e-bay for 19.99, or if you're interested I have at least one copy I could loan you.
