Didn't think many people looked at movies like that. 'Babette's Feast' is strange and sweet [psychologically sweet, as well as flavorful  :-*]. I love 'Fried Green Tomatoes' of course, being a redneck [I also love fried green tomatoes, with a little pepper on toast with butter ..... tangy!] 'Tampopo' is one of the funniest movies ever made ..... great send-up of the samurai genre.

Must find 'A Big Night'.

Eric Franzen:

The hell with Denmark, Jutland or Fanoe Links. Would you mind offering up an enlarged photo of that one you posted above. It appears that golfer might be exceedingly attractive to look at.

And yes, I too have been to Jutland but many many moons ago. All I can tell you about it now is it is remarkably different than the Tivoli Gardens.

Do you see that sixth photo down (or third from the bottom) that Tommy Naccarato posted? If we all went out to that spot in a fairly high wind we could all actually see for ourselves how God and Mother Nature produces sand dunes and natural bunkers.

There is a stretch of land on both sides of rather lonely A1A south of Amelia Island Florida that has every bit as beautiful natural sand formations as those photos above. Every year I go down there I take myself to that spot and sit amongst the natural glory of it. Unfortunately, it's a natural preserve and one is not really even supposed to trek into it. A few years ago I was sitting in there on a particularly windy day watching God and Mother Nature making natural dunes and taking notes on their particular architectural formulae. To my surprise eventually appeared behind me a Florida State Trooper who rather rudely blurted out; "What the f... do you think you're doing in here Bub?"

I said: "Well, my good man, I'm making notes on God and Mother Nature's architectural sand dune and bunker formulae to be applied in golf course architecture."

Damn lucky thing he didn't clap me into the hoosegow.  ;)

You don't have to travel all the way to BFE to find a great spot for a golf course.  Drive Hwy 1 north of San Fran all the way until it meets up with 101 and you will see some awesome stretches of linksland...

Kalen,
With all due respect, I've driven up there and I've never seen linksland such as the type in Babette's Feast. We're talking world class stuff that is a direct result of the ice age.

The examples I've posted from Mark's images are a mere shillings worth of what is actually there. You can go on Google Earth and check it out for yourself if you don't believe me. Just look at the main peninsula north of Bremen, Germany. It's undeniable.

Tommy,

I don't doubt that there is some amazing land up there.  You've got my interest up that now I will go look on Google Earth.  ;D

As to location though, while there are some remote locations that have worked, ie sand hills, barnbougle, bandon.  Just how much is it a build it and they will come??

Thanks Tommy!

The big white dune is a moving sand dune.  It's about a mile long and several hundred yards wide and moves several yards a year, the whole thing!  Now that should provide a decent challenge for you golf course architects!  Will you have to have a moving target that keeps pace with the dune?

Make it something you have to carry from the tips and you'll have a course that keeps up with technology without building any new tees! ;D

Mark, great pix.  What I remember most of the "Feast" was the utterly extravagrant and exquisite wines served.

2) malena-same director as cinema paradisio

I posted these before, but here they come again. It is no secret that Jylland has some of greatest, unspoilt linksland anywhere. The two images are from roughly the same spot, the second one looking inland from the big sand dune seen on the first one.

I suspect that someone thought of putting a golf course here long ago. This was a very fashionable place about 100 years ago, with artists and their families coming here for the quality of the light.  It is probably now wholly constrained by planning regulations.   There are hundreds of square miles of posible golf country here - not just the little bit I photographed by the travelling dune.

The above pic is from Fanø Golf links. I've penned a few words on it on www.steenstrup.org/golfpics.

Jutland has too few golf courses by the west coast due to environmental restrictions. Holstebro and Esbjerg are the best of the courses in Jutland from what I've heard, but neither are real close to the North Sea.
