Cabot Links

Anyone know the status of this project in Nova Scotia?  The web site has not been updated in some time.  Still says opening in 2008.  Has construction even begun?

So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

There is news concerning the status of this project.

I will wait until I have the green light to let everyone know.

There was a recent thread that gave a pretty good clue as to the course the course(s) have taken.

Robert Thompson of this board published an article in this month's Score Golf magazine, which is a Canadian golf publication. Well written.

Darn...
First Oregon, now Nova Scotia.

My two secret joyful destintions have become/are becoming too well known.  :'(

Actually, I'm glad.  Cape Breton deserves a visit.  It's a special place, and you don't need to wait till 2009.

Anybody want to build a hotel up there with me?  :)

Dan...Indeed Cape Breton is a very special place.  When I first was going to Nova Scotia, about 10 years ago, someone told me it would seem like the '50s. They were right.  My favorite recollection is driving around a 'square' in Halifax.  A car pulled up next to me and my thought, being an untrusting American, was "what does this guy want?".  Turns out he asked if we were lost and if he could help.  Referred us to a great fish and chips place.  Sure wasn't NYC...

This thread got me to thinking about the resort in Tasmania with Barnbougle Dunes.  It looks like a very remote location, even more remote than the proposed cabot links, but I could be wrong on that one.

Is this location thriving or just surviving?  After seeing all of the praise and posts about the course, it appears its nothing short of top notch. I just wonder if the location is going to work out in the longrun.  Does anyone in the know want to share any details?

Thanks,

Robert Thompson

I'm not sure it is cool to simply reprint the article here, especially since I don't own the copyright. A link might have worked just as well -- that said, I've toured the site and hope this gets off the ground.

Nice job on the story, Rob. Lots of good reporting there. (Oh, and I read it on Score, btw...  ;))

I've always had CBH on my short list of courses to play, and having Cabot nearby will make Nova Scotia a top notch ("hit and run"  ::)) location for golf.

Cheers,

I am lucky to be working for Jeff Mingay and Rod Whitman on their current project here in BC (Sagebrush) with PGA pro Richard Zokol. Since Rod and Jeff are extremely hands on when making a golf course, they will most likely wait until Sagebrush is completed before they start on Cabot Links.

Currently at Sagebrush most of the holes are roughed in, about half of the bunker work is completed, and the irrigation and cart path work has started. My guess is that work on Sagebrush will be finishing up early next year, and therefore Rod and Jeff will be starting work on Cabot Links next summer. Maybe Jeff will sign in and give a better answer as to when the construction of Cabot Links will start. Hope that helps.

Kalen, The area, Inverness, is purported to be an up and comer in the world as it relates to get away, retirement, whatever you want to call getting back to nature, types of places. It's a much easier commute from major east coast U.S. and Canadian cites than most out of the way spots. And it has the water.

When Mr. Keiser does commit the final 20% Cabot will be a wonderful sister resort to it's Pacific NW sibling.

Thanks,

It's in-between.  Doing more than surviving, but it depends on what you would call thriving.  They do about 15,000 rounds per year.

As has been discussed before, once they have a second course there, it will make it a more viable proposition for the residents of South and Western Australia, and most probably Queensland to take a trip.

Of course, if anything should happen to Matthew Mollica, God forbid, the rounds per annum will drop to around 10,000.

Thanks for the info all. I hope it can make it in the longrun, or at least until I get the chance to get down there to play it...  :)

The aspect that I'm most impressed with is Ran's putting his mney where his mouth is.

On one of our sanctioned trips, (Casa de Campo) Ran mentioned how much he would like the website to take on a more international flavor.

Since that time, I think it has, but there could always be more.

This is a great start in making the discussion board and this website more global, being accepted and appreciated for how comprehensive the web site truely is.

We should have a sanctioned GCA outing at Highlands Links sometime.  Whet the appetite for Cabot Links while playing one of the world's best.

And, yes, you can drive up there from the NE/MidAtlantic USA.  Just watch out for Moose on I-95 north of Augusta, ME   8) :D
