Spring in Dornoch (pictures)

I think that suggestion is a no-brainer Rich. I am all in favour. It is overdue that Buda returns to Scotland and I think Dornoch is a suitable draw. Lets see what the rest have to say. If there is a better idea I would like to hear it!

I think two GCA events a year, spring and autumn, is a nice idea - not sure if they both need to be Buda, although maybe that is academic. Maybe one could be Buda-lite - a 2 day rather than 3 day commitment.

What is the answer to the pressing question of how long the whins bloom for Rich? I played at Yelverton in Devon about a month ago and the gorse was out then, but maybe blooms earlier being further south?

I'd call it the Pest Cup--no need to devalue our carefully nurtured brand.

As for the gorse, it comes earlier and lasts longer, but is not as resplendent as in the past. Here in Fife we had gorse blooming in January and it's still out, but it never reached any sort of crescendo. I think you caught as good a crescendo as is possible these days when up in Dornoch. Hope it is lingering when I'm there next weekend!

I would be honored to be allowed to play in a Buda Cup at Dornoch in May 2008.

Also, I will arrive in Dornoch on July 14th this year. I think I have all my games set, but hopefully we will have a chance to meet over a pint in the newly refurbished bar area.

Would love to finally meet. I'll be at the Dornoch Hotel and probably in and out of the golf club bar a few times a day. Golfing most days at 1pm or so. Just ask around.

Great pics - they make the course look almost as good as it does in person.

Nice to see you and your friends again here at lunch on Monday.

Today was a VERY windy day at Dornoch, easily 3-4 clubs. The front 9 was downwind. Yesterday, I hit a good drive on #7 and hit 5-wood into the front greenside bunker. Today, I hit driver, 9-iron OVER the green! The inward 9 was a whole different story.

Our first week has gone by quickly and I am most grateful I will be here for 3 more.

David - sorry our meeting was truncated, but it was still good to catch up. Have you penetrated far enough into the clubhouse to see the pictures of Bill Clinton? I wonder when those went up. We were fortunate with the weather - nothing as unfriendly as you describe! Playing 11 and 18 into that wind you describe must have been very character-forming.

wonderful photos. I visited Dornoch at this time last year, but alas it was Saturday inter-club pennants. Good fun to watch, but I missed the game. The weather and the gorse were identical - perhaps mid-May is really a great time in Dornoch.

My camera was not working at this time, so your snaps have filled a void. By chance, do you have a picture of #17 which shows the multiple levels of play. I think in Rich's Experience, he describes the hole as involving the middle and lower (or upper?) dunes. It was a most interesting use of changes in levels of play.

For those who do not know Phillip, he is a very powerful player, as you can see below. There is also Bill McBride's 'reverse' side' and Andrew Mitchell. I would have liked to show a pic of Phillip playing a good bunker shot, but my extensive collections doesn't seem to have that one in it. Does such a photo exist?

James - nice to hear from you. I don't think I did take a picture of 17 from the top level but will check. The hole actually plays on 3 different levels - you go 200 yards from the tee, then down a shelf to the fairway where you hit your approach from, then the green itself is somewhat elevated again.

As for me playing a good bunker shot - you have to pay your dues. And then you will be part of a very elite group!

I don't have any photos of me having an eagle putt on a par 4. I don't think such a photo has the opportunity of existing. I suspect there may be some with you though, somewhere.

That 17th at Dornoch is a really cool hole (amongst many, many cool holes). I look forward to actually playing it, one day.
