Extreme golf - three courses in one day
« on: May 17, 2007, 01:53:27 PM »
If you had a choice to play three courses in one day, 54 holes total, which courses would you choose?

Of course, proximity of the courses to each other is important, because you can either walk, bike or drive a car from course to course - no jets or helicopters...

So time is the limiting factor.

My pick is Shinnecock, NGLA and Sebonack.

Winged East/West and Quaker Ridge.

Cypress Point first thing in the morning, then Spyglass Hill in the middle of the day. If I'm playing on the Summer Solstice I'd finish up with as many holes at Pebble Beach as the pace of play would allow. If there's not enough daylight for five and a half hours at Pebble I'd settle for a late-afternoon Wolf game at MPCC Shore.

Arcadia Bluffs, Crystal Downs, Kingsley in that order.

Plenty of time in a day for these three.

It's going to be hard to top some formulation from Long Island, NY or Pebble Beach, CA.  To me those must be the two winners.

But outside of those, well... the three courses at Bandon Dunes work nicely.

Pinehurst?

Riviera/LACC North/Bel-Air (hope for light traffic)...

Olympic Lake/SFGC/Lake Merced

Pine Valley, Merion East and Rolling Green for my East Coast pick, with Shinny, NGLA and Maidstone for back up.

This may be a stretch, but SFGC, Pasa. and CPC for No. Cal.

And Riviera, LACC and Valley Club for So. Cal.

Some of this will require my famous lead foot! 8)

While I certainly couldn't argue with the suggestions made already,
Gullane #1, Muirfield, North Berwick wouldn't be a bad day.

David:

I defy anyone to make the two CA selections you listed.. you've added an hour of driving WITHOUT TRAFFIC in each case... more in the NorCal version.  Those won't require a lead foot - they'd require a helicopter.

But it would be fun to try!

Mine are more realistic.

Just dreaming Hucks. ;)

If I must, I'll augment my selections for No Cal.

CPC
Pebble
Pasa. (It only takes 40 mins from there to the Peninsula)
Spyglass if Pasa is unrealistic

and So Cal.....

Riviera
LACC
Bel Air

You should restrict it to walking between courses only; that would be an interesting list that differs from previous posts .

I see Shinnecock, NGLA plus another in the area as tough competition based on that criteria.
AKA Mayday

If I had to use Mayday's critieria, I'd choose CPC, SH and MPCC. The WF courses and Quaker Ridge would be awfully nice as well and not to mention SFGC, OC and Lake Merced.

Michael - that might be a short list unless you're a really good walker.

Muirfield, Gullane, Luffness New?

Muirfield, Gullane, Archerfield?

How far is it to North Berwick (or Archerfield) from Gullane?

No sneaking on the bus!!!

David  - see my reply 4 - we're copacetic re SoCal.

Re NorCal, well... I remain dubious about the reality of including Pasatiempo in any trifecta of greats (although you surely could do Pasa/DeLaveaga/Seascape).  Pasa is just a bit too remote.  40 minutes is quite optomistic for parking lot to parking lot adding any of the PB area courses.

But dare to dream.

In any case, Pasa really isn't needed.  Any combo of Cypress/Pebble/Spyglass/either MPCC course works just fine, without the longish drive.

So far what I thought the obvious answer would be has not shown up here.

Bandon Dunes, Pacific Dunes, Bandon Trails

And since it would be so convenient, I suppose I could throw in the par 3 course for a cool down.

Oh my friend, one day you'll sit in the passenger seat while I'm driving and perhaps I can convince you!! ;) ;D

Agreed. I'm just such a sucker for Pasa.!

The Golf Club, Scioto C.C. and Muirfield Village (or Double Eagle) for central Ohio can be easily accomplished.

David:

I'm assuming relatively safe driving and obeying of normal traffic laws.   ;)

And I too am a sucker for Pasa.  I'm just also a sucker for reality.   But the main point is the last one - with all of those choices so much closer, why struggle to throw in Pasa?  Save that for the next day.

Gullane Nos. 1-3?

I managed it as a younger, fitter golfer.

No. 3 is a bit hazy in the memory.

In Melbourne you have any number of great combination. How about Yarra Yarra,Commonwealth and Huntingdale or Metropolitan.Perhaps the two Royal Melbourne's and Victoria GC.
In Surrey you could try The Berkshire's and Swinley Forest.

Anyone remember an article in Golf magazine about twenty years back?  George Peper and a few others were able to play The Old Course, Winged Foot West, and Pebble Beach in 24 hours.

Archie Baird (who many of you will know) belongs to the very exclusive "110 Club", which involves a day of foursomes golf as follows:

--36 at Gullane #1
--breakfast
--36 at Gullane #2
--lunch
--36 at Gullane #3
--just for good measure, tacking on two more holes somewhere to get to 110

Beat that!

(By the way, you'd never manage to walk from Gullane to North Berwick - the parts of the courses that are nearest one another aren't very near and are as far from their respective clubhouses as possible.)

Cheers,
Darren

Holy smokes.

I had lunch after 18 at Gullane #1 but the bartender plied me with wee drams so I never managed to do another 18. I was soaking wet from the horizontal rain anyway.

110 - that's extreme golf.
