This is an interesting question for several reasons.  First, it is a George Cobb design which makes it timely. Second, it could be considered a 1959 course but was worked on over time by the same architect past this point in time which puts it on the cusp of Classic vs Modern.  Thirdly, it is easily in the top 100 modern courses I would love to play but does that mean the architecture holds water?  I have a gut feeling it should be in if for no other reason then we already have a nine hole course in and a par three course also recognized could be great for the future of alternative designs.

Barney;  I think I get it by now;  you don't think the Dunes Club ("a nine hole Nugent course") should be rated in the top 100 Modern.  No need for any more threads making the point directly or indirectly.  By the way, have you played or seen the course?  Its unlike anything else Nugent has done and its pretty darn good.

Shelly, please...That is not the intent of this thread.  I simply was reading about Quail Hollow this morning and saw that George Cobb was the architect of both courses.  I would love to play the par three course at ANGC more than I would guess 90 of the top 100 modern courses.  I didn't even mention the G word in my post.

I am not one to pull punches but please know that I would never intentionally do anything to slam Mike Keiser on this board as I consider him to be the most poweful man in architecture today and a gift to us all as golfers.  Give me some credit.

To me, anything that would promote the construction of more par-2 courses would be worth the effort.  Let's face it: golf takes up too much time.  Nine-hole courses and par-3 courses, if more widely available, would seem to provide a solution to the six-hour golf experience (drive, warm up, play, eat and drive home) that is driving down the number of rounds played every year.

How about a separate listing for best nine-holers and one for best par-3 courses?  More lists means more courses get more credit and the consumer gets more information.

I'm hearing of plans for more par three courses all the time.  I've got three within 20 miles of my house that I have never played.  Between the one at Augusta and the new one at Bandon, not to mention Pine Valley, etc. etc.  I bet there are some great ones out there that nobody talks about outside one Wednesday in April.

Good John, another rating thread.  :)

it's fun to play but so are drinking games. as a course it's just 9 circles of short grass with holes in them. there are hundreds of better short courses around the world... most of the holes are just chips to a circular area of short grass... only 6, 8 and 9 are of any real interest. if it wasn't at Augusta then no one would ever talk about it...

Sure I'd like to play there again... but only because it would mean I was back at Augusta :-P

G thanks, what are some of the other great short courses you have played?
