It seems like one of the better TPC's, anyway. Thoughts?

It's a tough walk!!!

It is fun, but personally I liked ACC better, more intimate and a little better architecture, IMO............

I caddied for a college buddy a few years ago in the tournament.  It is a ridiculous walk--real estate golf for sure.

Some neat holes--#7,8 and 9 I remember thinking were very good.  #13 was also a nice driveable par 4.

I can't remember anyone having much nice to say about #18, though--very crappy finish.

Chris, why didn't they like #18? It seems to play well for the pro's at least - an accurate drive is important, then a good risk/reward shot with some tough shots around the green.

From the blimp shots it's hard to see the holes among all the houses.

I played Sugarloaf a few years ago in a charity event, then the next day with a business contact.  Three weeks after, I couldn't remember a hole.......  That's rare for me and doesn't say much for the course.

Looks like a tough spectator course.Do most holes have housing and ob on both sides? It looked like a very small crowd on Thurs. What kind of crowds do they draw?

Chris, why didn't they like #18? It seems to play well for the pro's at least - an accurate drive is important, then a good risk/reward shot with some tough shots around the green.

Drive was semi-blind and uphill to a island like landing area--deep fall off to the right, deep woods left and you ran out of fairway straight ahead.  Drive was demamnding I just don't think it fit many players eye if that makes any sense.

Second shot from at the top of the hill was another one that was not a player favorite.  Very downhill and you either lay up to another island like shot (lake left, grandstands right) and pitch on or you take your best guess with the yardage and play a little long.

I think many tour level and better players don't like dramatic elevation changes.  They don't want their ball hanging up in the air any more than necessary.  Some feel that while fans may love to see the ball hang up there over the water, it's kind of a hokey way to decide who may win the tournament. As a fifth hole it may be OK but not as the last hole.

I am NOT saying I completely agree but I understand where they are coming from--this is their livliehood and for many of the guys this type of hole brings "too much luck" and "yardage guessing" into play.  Again, this is the group who love holes that "are right there in front of you" ??? whatever the hell that is supposed to mean ;D

It's a horrible spectator course--very fan unfriendly requiring HUGE walks to see anything.  The old Atlanta Classic at ACC was 1000 times more fun and fan friendly.  BUT, it's about luxury boxes and corporate suites, not the average Joe who wants to go see great players up close.

ACC was also a hilly and demanding walk but Sugarloaf is even worse and more spread out.

There is a pretty neat "Party House" in Sugarloaf that ACC never had though--hopefully some of the Atlanta GCAers have only HEARD about it :D :D

ahhhhhhh...the Sugarloaf party house....well known that a foursome reached the house and a threesome left for the rest of the round!  I believe the main culprits are performing at a nearby "establishment" this week! ;D

I first played Sugarloaf when they had very few houses, played the equivalent of 6 rounds over two days; I was also playing it the day Payne Stewart's plane crashed, we were on the putting green when a TV crew drove up, an attractive woman ran up to me with a microphone and asked if I had heard what had happened to Payne. She told me.  I then intoduced her to Bobby "Long Ball" Wilson, a fellow pro who had gone to school with Payne.

A friend of mine has recently moved to Atlanta and joined the club.   I can remember EVERY HOLE and as we chatted last week he was amazed that I knew "his" course better than he did.  I found Sugarloaf to be an interesting Norman cart course, more fun to play than any other that I have played.  even the 18th hole!  Apparently they have another 9 holes that I don't know.  It appears the course helped sell some houses! :) Probably was the purpose,

When I played, the bunkers had very steep edges, as if they had been cut out of the ground (many Australian courses have similar looking edges, in pictures anyway).  If your ball just rolled into one the shot was almost impossible, no back swing.  I've noticed they look a bit softer now (from TV).

I found Sugarloaf to be an interesting Norman cart course,

I'd agree with that.  Again, my two cents were based on spending a week caddieing for a tour player and listening to the banter all week long--a very narrow perspective.

I personally like Norman/Dye's Medalist course in Hobe Sound.  Also, I live in Atlanta and all I can say is that I am not sure I'd drive out of my way (45 minutes) to play Sugarloaf based on what I saw.
