I'm sure that tossing the putter in the air is a natural reaction (clearly it is as it's been done a million times), but couldn't Tiger's fist pump be his natural reaction?  One man's natural reaction of joy is another man's taunt...

I guess the main thing is *a* reaction.  Tiger's seems as natural as any and is more like what I'd do (maybe because I've seen it done more often than the putter flip, particularly since Tiger's won with such regularity), while the Nicklaus putter flip was his instinctive reaction.  I don't see a problem with either.

And Tiger's not the only one pumping fists...I've seen more players do that than the putter flip in recent years - even on the Champions Tour.

Debating the merits of natural reactions - all of which stop well short of inappropriate levels in my opinion - seems a bit pointless in the end though, don't you think?  I really doubt Tiger is intending to taunt other players when he pumps his fist, just as I doubt Nicklaus was trying to wound his competitors when he flipped up his putter, it's just all about being overcome with joy for a moment and letting it out.

The only golf course equivalent I can think of to match your comments on football would be spiking the flagstick, but I haven't seen that done yet!

Anybody ever hear of Tommy Bolt or Tom Weiskopf.  People are human and part of the human condition is to lose it peridically.  I think Tiger holds up to the intense scrutiny pretty well.  There are not many Bjorn Borgs around.

Brian...we'll agree to disagree.  Yes I think it is likely a natural reaction.  I don't suspect Tiger has practiced fist pumping.  I just think it's poor etiquette.  To each his own.  BTW I still have never seen another golfer react quite this way.

Tommy...as far as other golfers, I always loved Stadler for his reactions.  Maybe I'm unfair, but yes, I hold the stars, especially someone of Tiger's stature, to a higher standard.

Good thing they didn't have a mic in the middle of the 15th fairway after Ogilvy's second sand wedge...

I was watching. I didn't see him say anything untoward. Did I miss it?

How about Chi Chi's swashbuckling routine? I kind of like it (although it gets old once you've seen it 100 times), but it's about as unnatural a reaction as you could have.

I should clarify.  The fist pumping I dislike is when Tiger moves his fist as if a boxing undercut.  He typically doesn't do it just once. This was quite evident when he sunk the famous chip on 16 a couple years ago.

I don't disagree with you.  Stars, whether they like it or not represent more than themselves.  A star like Tiger represents the sport and no one has worked harder to cultivate his reputation more except maybe Joe Dimaggio.

You haven't heard anything until you hear a double flutter-blast from the esteemed Pat Ward-Thomas. He would make Bolt and Snead sound like choir boys.

He's at work.  If I have a bad day at work, I may swear.

For the record, my wife teaches 1st grade.  Don't worry, they already know ALL of the good words and their proper application.  Tiger isn't teaching them anything new.

Oh my!
What have we come to that we accept the the fact that PROFESSIONALS use foul language?
I'm sorry. I do not agree.
Tiger should set the example not that he is in a "teaching" environment,  but he is in a "teaching environment." and fortunately for our children, he is not on at hour that is "bedtime" like most sports that we watch. Tiger is there for ALL to see and listen to and my children certainly respect his abilities!

Where Tiger in a very sour mood stated that he once again threw away a round "and then some," Appleby when asked about his triple bogey in a manner that seemed to intimate his having a complete collapse, stated that "these things are bound to happen at Augusta this week," and that he was actually "very pleased" about his round and "looking forward to tomorrow."

Stuart Appleby: 35 years old, 8 wins, 0 majors
Tiger Woods: 31 years old, 56 wins, 12 majors

The Appleby Approach gets you wins at Kapalua and the TPC at Avenel, but not much more.

Golf is more than "majors"

Bobby sure would not like Chi-Chi's swashbuckling antics. But then again, Bobby walked off the Old Course mid round in disgust when he first played it! ;)

I wasn't impressed. His, "What the hell.." after dumping short on 17 lacked class or dignity.

He should know better. Tiger is the game's most visible player, and, whether he likes it or not, expectations accompany that role.

Besides, foul words never bring back bad shots.
