Golf Digest Ranking (Crystal Down Photo)
« on: April 09, 2007, 08:30:20 AM »
I just got my Golf Digest where they rank that 100 best courses.

One of the pictures they show is of Crystal Downs but I can't figure out what hole it is.  They show a picture of a green with a bunker each on the front right and front left of the green.  You can see Lake Michigan in on the horizon in the background as well as another hole in the background.

I'm thinking it is #14 but I didn't think you could see Lake Michigan from there.  Can anyone confirm which hole this is?  Mr. Doak?

The picture is a telephoto view of the 17th green, probably taken from the tee.  You can see a bunker on the fifth hole in the background.

Thanks, Tom.

I thought it might be 17 but when I saw the bunker in the background I never thought it might be the 5th hole.  I was just thinking about the 10th and/ror 18th fairway and I know you can't see those from the vantage of the picture.  I also didn't remember the two greenside bunkers.  It's been a number of years since I made it up there.

John,
You wouldn't remember the bunkers unless you had been in them. :) In general you focus on hitting the fairway on that hole, and then once in the fairway you can't see the bunkers anymore.
"Perimeter-weighted fairways", The best euphemism for containment mounding I've ever heard.

I have to say (and this is probably going to curse me the next time I'm there) I am able to successfully avoid the bunkers at CD.  I've been in the fairway bunker on the right side of the first hole from both the first and second tees but other than that I can't say I've had too many bunker adventures.  Well, I've been in bunkers on 13 a few times.  :-(
