What would you shoot at ANGC as it played today?
« on: April 06, 2007, 09:15:17 PM »
I hate to admit it but even as a five handicap I am not sure I would break 100.

I don't have a clue, it would be a high number but I would love every minute of it.

As a 6 - 115

It must slope out at 185 with the course set up as it is today.

I was out there today...greens are extremely firm...I think I could break 90...someone IM Mike Whitaker and get his thoughts on his likely score....I have an opinion....

I'm not sure I could break 100. However, if played every hole for bogie I think I would make more pars than doubles... so, I might shoot around 90. What say you, Mr. Fairey?

Michael and Joe,
You guys must be sticks, because some of the best golfers in the world are shooting in the eighties.
I can see an 11 handicap like me breaking 110, by taking no risks, laying up in front of green openings and relying on my short game and putting to get in the hole in 3-4 more strokes. Thats if I was playing for score. To have fun and not worrying about score I would just go for it and try to play the shots required. I'm sure the number I would tally would be much higher that way, but what the heck.

For those who have played the course, albeit not under Masters conditions, how high do you shoot above your usual scores?

I'm about an 18 handicap these days and I haven't made it out for a round of golf in 4 months, but I have magical feeling that had I played this course on this day from these tees in these conditions, I probably would have gone low and shot 81.

I would have then gone on to shoot 97 from the white tees at the local muni tomorrow.  I'm sure you've all experienced the "play way better than expectations after a long layoff only to follow it up with three months of poor golf" misery.

I have only seen the place once in person, but I think that the answer depends on how good your shortgame is. I am about the same Handicap as you, but I rely on my shortgame more than most 10 handicappers.

I'd like to think that I could keep it under 100 by using the techniques you outlined. But the simple fact is that the length would KILL me.

Playing from the member's tees would be another matter entirely. The course actually looks like a lot of fun from those tees. I know someone from Augusta who's played it a few times on Caddy Day, as his wife works in the Pro Shop. He's about a 9 and says he can shoot in the low 80s without too much trouble.

With the full Master's green speed and hole locations, most 15 handicappers would play hell breaking 90 even if you gave them 18 greens in regulation. They'd putt off the green several times and three- or four-putt so often they'd be in shock.

It would be easier to count how many times I would have picked up!  I thought for sure Watson on the 18th was going to do just that.

I played Riviera the day after the Nissan from the championship tees in about the same weather...not sure what course is tougher but I felt like I was playing around 10 par 5's...

I'm not sure, but it's my understanding that after Phil Mickelson was quoted as saying that the winning score would be over par and David Feherty compared it to a US Open, someone at the USGA called Oakmont and told them to begin double-cutting and rolling the greens tonight and to do it daily until Father's Day...

Julien Guerrier, Casey Watabu, Dave Womack, and Richie Ramsay are all better players than I am, and between them they shot 7 of 8 rounds in the 80's. So I'd say I have very little chance of breaking 80 and a probable score around 85, if I had a bit of time to prepare.

If I had to play it tomorrow I'd probably shoot 100.

As a 3 hcp or thereabouts I'm guessing about 90. I've played Wolf Run at about 6900 yards and Whistling Straits from the tips and shot 87 both times. If I played well at Augusta I think I would break 90. If I drove the ball poorly I certainly would not.

I think some of the pros difficulties come from them playing in the Masters on TV etc. You put me in that pressure cooker and triple digits would certainly be a possibility once I started going in the wrong direction :)

The other thing that affects the scores is pride. If you, as a 3, set out to limit risk and intentionally played many of the par 4s as three-shot holes. You might be able to find a position for your second shot that made it easier to make a sure five/possible four.

But they simply cannot take that approach--for two reasons. First is that even if it works, it won't produce a competitive score, and second their pride won't let them.

So they try to make par from a questionable position, and end up in a spot that is completely hopeless. When I was there two years ago for two practice rounds, I finally saw for myself how it was possible to be 30 feet from the hole and have virtually no chance.

From behind the green on #1, for instance, especially with a back hole location, I bet results are almost as bad as if it was water hazard. I don't think there's any chance of pitching it close from there, and the difference in speed between the fringe and green, combined with the upslope, makes putting close a miracle.

Dave Womack was 21 over par for 2 days.....I have seen him play in our events and par would be a high score for him in those events......
If guys on here played ANGC during an average week some would shoot par or maybe below..that same guy would not break 100 as it sits now..IMHO.....I dont think many realize that many of the shots we see roll out 30 feet would be backing up on many places and three putts would not be the concern....4 and 5 putts would be.....and we wold all have at least 6 of those..thats 24 strokes right there....

Somewhere between 90 and 100. The par 5's are all lay ups so I'd be hitting wedge or less into all of them and the par 3's are all one shoters, so the difficulty is the par 4's, which wind up all as layups because the course is so long, so maybe 5 par's, 5 doubles and the rest bogies, a couple of 4 puuts put me around 92 or so.
Live Jupiter, Fl, was  4 handicap, played top 100 US, top 75 World. Great memories, no longer play, 4 back surgeries. I don't miss a lot of things about golf, life is simpler with out it. I miss my 60 degree wedge shots, don't miss nasty weather, icing, back spasms. Last course I played was Augusta

I'm a 7 and the way it's set up at the moment I doubt I'd be breaking 100.

Too many potential disasters, which when coupled with the fiendish greens would make it nigh on impossible.

I've played Wentworth after the PGA and shot 85, and played Sunningdale after IFQ for the Open and shot 74 (albeit as it's my home course this shouldn't be considered as valid a comparison).

On the round after the IFQ, I believe the Medallist score was -8 for the two rounds. My mate, who is now scratch but used to play relatively serious golf at Uni, shot a 63!

I'm looking at the early scores on the Saturday leader board and see 4 bogeys, one double and zero pars at #1.

It must be absolutely brutal out there.  It's cold here in Atlanta and the wind has been picking up as the morning goes along.

I have enjoyed reading the posts on this thread.  I find it really amusing.
It is kind of like the 18 handicapper that when you ask him how far he drives it, he say 290-300 easy...when in fact he pops it out there about 240.   I have heard it so many times.

So this idea that I have read where a 18 handicapper could break 100, I find even more amusing.  I would venture if an 18 handicapper putted every putt out and counted every penalty stroke properly, they would probably not break 125.

I am a scratch player and I have played the lenthened AN course and I played pretty decently to shoot 82 and the conditions were not even close to what I am watching on TV.

This is just a brutally difficult golf course this week.  I have played some hard ones, but I do believe that AN during weather and championship conditions like we have seen, is probably the most difficult course I have ever seen.   Carnoustie is close.

BTW, the set up of the course could be much more difficult.   They set at least 1/3 of those pins in hollows where the ball collects.   I have played it when the pins were on knobs and crowns and considerably more difficult.   I could putt all day, and often did.  :)

A 18 handicapper literally might not finish the round.   Can you imagine a 18 handicapper trying to hit the shot over the water from that downslope on 15 from a very tight lie.   I would venture that they would skull it in the water on 16 over the 15th or chunk it in the water in front of the 15th green 10 times more often than just keeping the shot on land.  An 18 handicapper just doesn't have that shot in his bag.  Many of the world's best can't hit it on the green either.

The first thing I'd have to do is adjust my wardrobe.  No, not like all those pretty boys who have already missed the cut (Camillo et al.), but I would need a bib, because I'd surely puke all over myself before I got to the 4th tee.  I'd definitely need some Depends (several, truth be told) because I'd piss and shit myself something fierce as soon as Rae's creek came into my view.  I'd probably need cargo pants to hold a flask and a couple Heineken kegs because those blue blooded bastards probably don't have a beer biscuit on the course for players.  Finally, I'd need a complete gore tex suit to envelop my body for entombment on the grounds, because I'd surely die since I'm convinced I'd be in heaven.

And I'd probably shoot 112, scoring like Bill Clinton.

those greens are SO severe...i don't think one can truly appreciate just how difficult they are during the tournament - unless any of us has played the course right after the tournament.....

Paul, I'm pretty good with the flatstick, so I think I could keep it to four putts or better on the holes!  ;D

Put me down for about 110 if I played smart, maybe even breaking 100 if I was having a very good day!
