Atlanta Recommendations

Will be staying in Buckhead on April 10/11. Meeting ends at 2pm on the 11th... looking for an afternoon round recommendation that will not leave me too far from the airport.

All thoughts (public and private) are welcome.

Mike Young's Wolf Creek.  Very good golf course, very affordable, and you'll be 10-15 minutes from the airport.

East Lake (private) was Bobby Jones' home course and is about 20 minutes from the airport. It's 5 minutes east of downtown.

I second A.G.'s recommendation of Wolf Creek. There are some very good holes there, the price is right and you are, essentially, at the airport.

East Lake is obviously a good idea too, but you will have to play with a member and caddies are required.

The other idea is Fort MacPherson. I have never played it. There are plans afoot for the city to take it over when the Army shuts down the base. Anyone have any information? Is it worth a visit?

I played Fort Mac last October in a USO tournament and really enjoyed it.  It isn't the best course in town but a fun course with a few nice holes.  I would like the city to save it but am concerned that it may suffer.  It was a shot gun start so I really can't remember what hole it is but the hole that sticks out in my mind was a shortish par 5 that is a sweeping dog leg left with a cedar tree in the fairway about 190 out, I really liked it.

To answer the question for the post, Wolf Creek is a good bet.

Thanks for the recommendations... I must admit when in Atlanta find the PEACHTREE RD. you actually want is problematic... hope finding a golf course named Peachtree is easier.

Thinking of saving my NSWGC reciprical mojo for a visit to Merion/Pine Valley at the end of the summer though.

Bear's Best is a good public course, but expensive.  Best value is Mystery Valley, Dick Wilson.  Last year Mystery Valley was $20.

Two courses, both a little drive north. Up I-85 is a Mike Riley course called Reunion, which is my favorite daily fee course in north metro-Atlanta. Two other good courses are St. Marlo (up 400) and Chestatee, also up 400. Both courses are Denis Griffiths designs that are quite enjoyable - especially the latter.

Bear's Best would be overpriced at half its current greens fee, IMO.

Wolf Creek is a better track than Mystery Valley, and will be in better condition as well.  Reunion is well over an hour from the airport, as is Chestatee, with St. Marlo at least an hour.  I've played all of them, like all of them.  Wolf Creek is far better than St. Marlo, and Chestatee, and better than Reunion (which I like a lot).  But for Anthony's requirements (meeting ending at 2 p.m., need to be near the airport) Wolf Creek is an absolute no-brainer.  If you guys haven't been there, you need to go.

AG is right you can't go wrong with Wolf Creek. Another course close by is Brown's Mill. It is a nice layout and the best kept City of Atlanta course. I believe they just went to champion bermuda greens as well. About 10 min from the airport.

I know N Fulton, aka Chastain Park, was redone last year and, according to my brother, is a major improvement. It make sense that the City wouldn't do all their courses at once, I mean the way they throw money at golf down at city hall
