Quick Report: Stonelick Hills Cincinnati
« on: March 26, 2007, 04:14:58 PM »
I had the opportunity over the weekend to play Stonelick Hills located east of Cincinnati.  I am considering having an outing there and wanted to play the course before I pulled the trigger.  It has been rated as one of the best public courses in the state since opening three years ago.

Disclaimer:  thoughts reflected below are provided by a rank architecture novice under no warranty and do not reflect the views of Major League Baseball.

Overall impression:  A good course with a lot of surprising and unusual hole designs.  Note that “surprising and unusual” are not synonyms for “bad and annoying”.  The flow and pace of the course is affected negatively by the distances between holes and the difficulty for walkers.  I very much enjoyed the course with it’s wide variety of holes.

A couple of summers ago they lost six greens but I did not see any residual damage. They had obviously cleared out a lot of trees and I saw fans near a couple of greens.  The course was in very good condition with the exception of hole #10. It was closed due to construction.  I don’t know exactly what they were doing but large chunks of the fairway were being resodded.

Misc thoughts in no particular order.

Hole #2 -- http://www.stonelickhills.com/tour2.php

Someone asked me about the tree on this hole that is on the right side of the fairway.  The tree is a 50+ foot tall sycamore and sits about 100 yards from the green.  I have no doubt that this tree will give fits to anyone who hits the right/center of the fairway.  You could hit a great drive with a short/mid iron into the green and still be blocked out of the green.  The only shot option is a low runner under the tree from the right/middle of the fairway.  Drives on the left side will have a clear shot to the green.

This hole also features a sunken green.  The green is about 3 or 4 feet below the grade of the fairway.  I had never seen anything like this before and have to say I really liked it.  I will help people hitting low runners under the tree in the fairway and it makes chipping from short of the green interesting.

Hole #6  http://www.stonelickhills.com/tour6.php

I hit my tee shot short and a little right on this hole and expected to be in a greenside bunker.  However, when I got up to the green I found grass where I expected a bunker to be.  Again, this was another situation where I had in my head what I was going to encounter I actually found something else.

Hole #8  http://www.stonelickhills.com/tour8.php

A nice enough hole but the greenside bunker with the tree in it really bugs me.  Bunkers are penal enough but to have a longish bunker shot with a tree in your way will make an up and down next to impossible.

Walking  http://www.pbase.com/jpflumjr/image/76219830

Damn – this course is very difficult to walk.  The distances from greens to tees are immense.  There is probably not a single walk under 100 yards and several are easily 200 yards plus.  One stretch that is particularly frustrating is holes 4-6.  You walk off the green for hole #4 and have to walk back almost the entire length of the hole to get to the 5th tee.  Then, from the 5th green, you have a 300+ yard walk up and down some serious hills to get to the 6th tee.  In many cases once you leave the green you have to go back down the fairway in the opposite direction to get to the next tee.  Very annoying.  This really disrupts the flow of the course.

wow, your last paragraph John, if I understand correctly, makes walking sound dangerous :o...i.e., you are walking back in the direction people are hitting tee balls from!

Paul,

Absolutely.  Look at the course map and the exits from greens 2, 4, 7, 8, and 14.  All of the paths to the next tees are "in the line of fire" from the group behind.  The exits from 4, 8, and 14 are particularly bad.

boy I just don't get that kind of stuff John...I played a course in MD last year that had 2 of those holes..

I would think basic safety of the golfers would come even before quality of the holes

I played here last summer and was able to hitch rides between holes >:(; not too bad a walk otherwise. I enjoyed the place; #2 with the sunken green was something I'd not seen before. #18 was a great finisher, and the shortest 590 yard par 5 of all time.....

John;

Glad you enjoyed the course overall. Not bad for a new architect, eh? Yes, perhaps some routing probs for walkers, but I suspect he never thought that many people would want to.

It certainly forces one to drive the ball well and move it both ways, which is something I enjoy from a design standpoint, if not from a reality standpoint. Better than I would do on my first design....of course the civil engineer in me might take the Raynor approach 8).

Was also pleased with the financial experience; in a 50 mile radius from home SH would go for ~ $200 during the week!

Doug,

I agree 100% -- for a first timer/amateur it is very good.  The walking difficulty left a bad taste in my mouth b/c I LOVE to walk but other than that I really enjoyed it.

I thought both 9 and 18 were a lot of fun.  They are both what I might call 1st and 3rd shot holes for a shortish hitter like me.  Hit a good shot off the tee and you are left with really a very easy layup with a mid-iron/hybrid.  Then you'll have a short iron/wedge with which to attack.

At $45 to walk it was pretty much a bargain.

John,

You WALKED? Damn, dog. No wonder you are freakishly thin.
BTW I think the course is better than Shaker, but the routing is truly troublesome for walkers.
Don't like #1 very much. I like driver off the first tee..
But after that it's not bad..
What did you think about #5 and #17?

Jesse,

Freakishly thin = 5'10" and 125 pounds.
Pound for pound the longest hitter the world has ever seen.   ;D

I thought #5 and #17 were OK -- not great but not bad either.  I thought that the par fives on the course were really strong.

I'd compare it favorably to Shaker as well but I like Shaker better.  It had the same feel where each hole was set apart from the others and you felt like you had the course all to yourself.  I think that in general the holes @ Shaker are better but there are a couple of goofy ones out that that really detract from the rest, Woodlands #6 and #7 to be specific.  Stonelick didn't seem to have those goofy holes to bring down the rest of the course.

And, maybe I'm just hung up on this walking thing, but Shaker is MUCH MUCH easier to walk than Stonelick.  I can only think of four long hikes at Shaker (all on the Woodlands course) whereas Stonelick has a hike between every hole.

That's annoying not only due to the length of the walk
(which didn't bother me, I don't mind long walks), but I
just *HATE* walking backwards down the hole I just played.

It just feels wrong.  Golf courses should keep you moving
in a general 'forward' direction hole to hole.

IMHO

John,

No disrespect.
You may be freakishly thin but I'm extrodinarily fat.
5'10"
125 ?
I've had strips of bacon thicker than that.
Really.
The sad thing is you probably are longer than me.
I'm going to be out your way this summer.
Let's go hit it.
I'll instant message you my info.

Jesse,

LOL.  No disrespect taken.

Definitely drop me a not when you get in town and we'll get a game.  FWIW, I'm holding an event here in town during July.

Check out www.rsgcincinnati.com for details.

I live in Anderson -- near Coney Island.
