Thanks Bob

For all its faults, the Daily Torygraph always gives good obituary.

Shame the R&A still completely lacks any sense of humour......

RIP, Maurice.  We hardly knew ye.

Do the R+A reliase that they could get a lot of working class people into the game by having a sense of Humour.

God Bless Maurice.

Quite an life. I must admit it was a pleasure to read his obit early oin a Saturday morning it put a smile on my face.

A bit more humour on the R&A part would be a very good move. I must hand it to the UK they also gave us Eddie the Eagle of ski jump fame. Both quite common men attempting to do quite uncommon things. Good for them and us.
The things a man has heard and seen are threads of life, and if he pulls them carefully from the confused distaff of memory, any who will can weave them into whatever garments of belief please them best.

Bob,
  Thanks for the story.
I think all of us have felt a letdown in qualifiers - hard not to appreciate Flitcroft's optimism.  If only I had that 4 wood.

You gotta love a fellow like that.  I'll bet he was fun everywhere he went.  I'm not certain I would liike to play in a qualifier with him though.

As a former crane operator in a foundry, Maurice shares an occupation and apparently a similar sense of humor of a chap who occasionally frequents this site, one Slag Bandoon.  But, from the reported scores, I think Slag could take Maurice down on pretty much any course, including a beach.  ;) ;D 8)

What would it add to the story if the R&A were to have a better sense of humor?

I interviewed Maurice a few years ago (I think I was one of the few writers who he didn't demand money from in return for his time) and found him quite amusing. His best line came when he and his wife were flown out to attend the Flitcroft Cup (I think the host course is in Michigan) in 1988. He announced it was the first time they'd been out of the house together "since the gas oven exploded."

Eamon,

You're just testing us to see if we actually read the obituary, aren't you?

Is it just me? #117.

Who would be the ultimate choice of actor to play the glorious Mr F in the biopic of his highly entertaining time on this rock?

I am presently favouring Ricky Gervais. He might be too 'worldly-wise' though. Maybe we need a proper innocent. Thoughts?

I didn't read it myself, so I assume his 'oven' quip is in there. I suppose getting a Telegraph obit proves what he said to me - that'll long after many Open champions are forgotten, he'll still be remembered.
