"Napoleonic," does it?  It doesn't even sound like much of a "construction scheme"... it sounds like a bit of house-cleaning (edit: just to say, my guess is that writer in 1912 was overstating his case...)

A very useful Web site.

On GCA, tinyurl is one way to post links that break up through direct post, but not necessary at all.

This link is even 'tinier' to the same article without using external help.  Basically as easy as posting pics.

Guess I could add:  "the home of the best links - favored by the best...." oh, never mind.  ;) ;D ::)

if I've understood you right, the discussion that follows here might be along the lines of "we thought he didn't move any dirt, but he may have moved more dirt than we thought"?

If so, I don't know how productive that discussion will be. Then and now, that seems a bit like missing the forest for the trees....but without the forest or the trees

Not at all.

My thought was more along the lines of...dynamite was the most destructive and disrupting tool yet used in golf course construction (95 years ago), what would be it's equivalent considering the size ond power of the tools used today?[/i]



Whatever tool it is, if it were used it may well generate the same feelings Mr. Leach had in 1912.

Yes, whatever today's relative equivalent to dynamite is would engender the same sentiments as Leach's...especially because whatever it is would be used for much more Napoleonic purposes, I'd imagine...

This, I thought, was the most interesting paragraph in the piece:

"Ross loved nearly all things mechanical, from sophisticated automobiles to mundane household products.
