Big words indeed.  Care to guess who and where ?  Or does he just say this about all his courses...

I don't think this is such a grandiose statement.  He doesn't say its the best nine holes ever, just his best nine.  Big difference in my opinion.

Even the worst architect ever has HIS best nine somewhere.

This is a grandiose statement from this fella.  If it is his best nine then he has hundreds to choose from.

"It will be a very special and enjoyable golf course. You're in the middle of everything--the best fishing, hunting, water sports, skiing, the wilderness ... and everything is so close."

Scott, I'll bear with you for a while. Even without your last clew. And a gold coin goes to the winner? He may have even said that after his first course was halfway open, somewhere around the world.

Peter - that coin fiasco was quite funny, except for the joker that paid 100k for his endorsement!  I have to run so will let you run with this...

Sounds like JN to me....that hole in the top right hand corner is the same picture that Garland posted during grow in.  I can't remember where the course is located though...Australia I think?

Its in NZ...here is the link

That's cause Jack knows who designed Sebonack ;)
"Let's slow the damned greens down a bit, not take the character out of them." Tom Doak

Yes, that is Kinloch, located near the shore of Lake Taupo near the centre of New Zealand's North Island.
South of Rotorua
NW of Napier.

hmm, a departure in bunker style.

what a coincidence :-\
What does it matter if the poor player can putt all the way from tee to green, provided that he has to zigzag so frequently that he takes six or seven putts to reach it?     --Alistair Mackenzie--

I knew whose course it was, but the funny thing is that the hole in the distance looks VERY much like a hole someone posted here a few months ago from Canada ... can't remember if it was Hurdzan's or Carrick's or whose.

The quote sounds good while being essentially meaningless -- perfect golf p.r. stuff!!!  Pete Dye had his own phrase a few years ago, that the course was going to be "one of my best".

Seriously, though, after you build 25 or 50 or 100 courses, what are you going to say?  You're not just going to say that it's another fine example of your work ...

The course you may be thinking of in Canada is Bond Head - North.  A Hurdzan course that opened last summer.

The original post with the pic of that top hole was done by Garland and it was correctly attributed to JN in the end.

Kalen:

I did see that thread, too, but I'm pretty sure Paul is right that it was a picture of a hole at Bond Head that I was remembering.

Guess I'm a little late to this party. When I first saw the quote, I immediately thought of Tom Fazio. In his book, he talks about how designers are constantly learning and always feel they can do better than their last effort.

Too many bunkers in that picture, no? Obviously hard to tell having not been there but that is what it seems like to me based on that one pic.
