Iceland golf?
« on: February 20, 2007, 02:43:08 PM »
This Boston guy is in the right corner of the country to consider this as a destination someday...

In the tradition of the Black Sands thread...

Are there 4-5 other courses worth playing up there that may compliment BS when it's finished?

Just poking around, it appears that Reykjavik GC is one of the oldest and most well-known, Akureyri is the most northerly (and hosts the Arctic Open pushed by Britannia Golf), and the course in the Westman Islands is located in a volcano crater.

It doesn't seem like there are too many (or any?) modern or classic layouts in the sense we have in the US (no upscale public types), and the few pics I have seen make the golf appear more like rural British Isles in style.

Any thoughts?

So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

I've long wanted to visit Reykjavik, and hope to some day soon.

I was just reading that Iceland, per capita, has one of the largest golfing populations in Europe.

I was preparing to bring a grop there a few years ago until I checked out the average temperatures.

Some places have two seasons; fourth of July and winter, Iceland has no fourth of July.

Iceland has more than 50 Golf courses and the second highest life expectancy in the world, so the climate should be tolerable.

There's a course in the crater of a volcano called Vestmannaeyjar. This is a classic course built in 1938. They rebuilt it in the 70s because some of it was claimed by a Lava stream. The 17th hole is said to not belong to geography.

Friends,

I live, and do most of my work, in Iceland. A few facts:

There are just over 60 golf courses in the country. The population has just reached 300 thousand. Most of us live in Reykjavik, or thereabouts, ca. 200 thousand. Iceland has the most golf holes per capita in Europe, along with Sweden, according to a new report from KPMG.

Most of the courses are nine-holers, scattered around the coast. Most of them have been built, or laid out rather, by enthusiasts in each town, with very little money to spend. Thankfully, I'd say, because many of these are quirky and beautiful little courses where native vegetation or natural landforms play a big role, often in a rather unusual way.

There are twelve 18 hole courses in the country. Interesting choices near Reykjavik (18 holers only) would be Reykjavik Old (Grafarholt) in the city, Keilir GC on the way to/from the airport. In more remote locations, I'd say you should check out the Arctic Open at Akureyri GC (the most northerly 18 hole course in the world according to the R&A, I am re-designing and consulting there) and The Volcano Open in Vestmannaeyjar.

Although the oldest golf club, Reykjavik GC, was established in 1934, the oldest existing course was built around 1960.

This is the basic stuff. I will try to follow up with more info if requested.

Also, I remember that I promised to post some photos from Geysir Golf Club, a nine hole design of mine that was opened in July. I will include the following link as a shameless plug:

I found some info on the Volcano Open:

EI-05/06: Volcano Open Golf Tournament in Westman Islands
29.06.- 04.07.2007

Celebrating the end of the eruption. This has become a fixed event in the islanders´social life the first Saturday in July since 1973 when the eruption was officially declared ended. All the pubs open their doors and floors for all musicians for singing and dancing and former permanent inhabitants visit the island to join the celebration.

The Golf Tournament (for golfers and non golfers): The competition will be two rounds (36 holes) 18.holes On Friday the 01 July and 18 holes on Saturday the 2nd.  Competitors will play in two handicap divisions 0-14.4 and 14.5-28.  There will be prices for the first three places with handicap in each division plus a prize for the best gross score in each division.  There will also be extra prizes for nearest the hole on some of the par three holes.  Played is by Stableford points.  Maximum exact handicap for men is 24 and 28 for women.  All competitors will have to show their current handicap certificates.  The Volcano open is a unique tournament playing in Iceland's Vestmannaeyjar.  Set in an old Volcano this is a great test in golf.  Teeing off against the bakcdrop of volcanic walls, changing wind directions on the same hole and playing the sea are all features of golf in Vestmannaeyjar.

This sounds like a blast!

I played Akureyri, where the island tallest tree (5 meter high) can be seen, some 15 years ago and remember a very windy day and a malignant rough.
Reykjavik hosted the Junior European Championships around that time. There are better courses elsewhere but a visit to the mixture of ice and fire that is Iceland is worth the trip. Plenty of rain and treacherous winds are to be expected.
