A unique golf hole
« on: February 20, 2007, 01:03:38 PM »
While surfing the net, which I like to call GCA research  ;), I occasionally run accross a unique hole that I like to share. Any guesses as to the course, architect, and hole # of this one?

Course - I don't know
Architect - I don't know
Hole - Fourth

To me, it looks more like a 13th hole.

Sparrebosch it is indeed.  The resort is also known as Pezula, but I think that is the general name of the management group for the resort.

The hole is #14, and is actually a short par 4, as much as it looks like a par 3 from the photo.

The designers were a pair of california boys, David Dale and Ronald Fream.

Nice job Andrew, do you live in South Africa?

I just assumed you were from NZ and was hoping it was built on the motherland! ;)

Looks like fun, but my architectural eye sheds a tear over those paths be they for cart or foot...
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

What's unique about it?

The size of the greenside bunker, the various paths leading to the green, the shape of the bunker.  And its not everyday you get to play a course that sits high atop the cliffs overlooking the ocean below.

Not much exposure to Fream?

Check this out!

Mike Cirba's answer to a question I asked him after we played the course shown in the Google Link above ..."There's just more of it". (One can click/drag/pan this linked photo of the 9th at SG.)

Thanks for the additional links all.

And no, not much exposure to prior work by these guys.  Johns google shot shows the entire hole and while it it considered "driveable" tough to run it up somewhere..

After looking at the routing I was wondering if number 17 was a par 3 or par 4.  Looks pretty short for a par 4, but the bunkering suggests that it is one.

Nice link.  I particularly liked using the google to pan west about 120 miles to coastline between Waenhuiskranz and Skipskop.  WOW!!!  Talk about some golfy looking dunesland ground!  There is the answer to you folks asking where a great place in the world would be to compare to the Barneygoogles and Bandon sort of world class sites for golf. :o 8)
