What are your favorite weather conditions for golf?
« on: February 12, 2007, 01:44:02 AM »
Building on the thread about the coldest you'll golf in..  What are your ideal golfing conditions?

I've got two favorites.  For day in and day out play, I'd like it about 85F, a bit humid, with a decent breeze (maybe 15 mph)  Most people don't like it that warm, but I like sweating a bit when I'm playing.  Not dripping on my ball standing over a putt sweaty, but enough that I'll get some sweaty spots on my shirt.  The breeze keeps my hands from getting too sweaty (I don't wear a glove)

The other conditions I enjoy are REALLY strong winds, the stronger the better without it raining or being uncomfortably cold.  The strongest the wind gets around here without a storm or one of those really cold March day is about 35 mph, with a stronger gust here and there, and I enjoy that.  But one of the things I really like about Scotland and especially Ireland is that you can see stronger winds than that and the courses are still playable.  I wouldn't want to do that every day, but it sure is a lot of fun.  Its a different game when the wind's blowing at 50 mph, and some people probably think you can't play when its blowing that hard, but they've obviously not spent enough time across the pond.

Alright...somebody's got to say it.

Give me 72 and sunny with little or no wind. This game is hard enough for me without the weather making it more difficult.

That said, I do agree that part of the fun of playing a single course multiple times is seeing different conditions...but if I were going to get the same thing all the time that's what I'd want!

Real men!
I guess I'm a wimp. 65 degrees, or whatever is cool enough to still wear a sweater and never consider shorts. 2 club wind.

Sounds about right, though 65 degrees isn't sweater weather up here in Northumberland.
In June I will be riding the first three stages of this year's Tour de France route for charity.  630km (394 miles) in three days, with 7800m (25,600 feet) of climbing for the William Wates Memorial Trust (https://rideleloop.org/the-charity/) which supports underprivileged young people.

55-60 degrees with sun and a light breeze seems ideal.

Interestingly enough, that is the precise forecast for this weekend when I'm playing Forrest Richardson's new course, the Links at Las Palomas in Puerto Penasco, Mexico!

That's about my favorite too.  It's like that a lot in Santa Barbara year around.

Least favorite?  Gulf Coast July-August, 95* with 80% humidity and no relief in sight!  :o

Andy, Bill

I'm with you. 72 degrees and sunny. In Toronto, I get that about 3 times a year.

Fall golf is very nice too, a sweater and cap all that British Open kind of feel, I even start walking a little more like Tom Watson -- and the courses are less full.

#1 - Sunny not a cloud in the sky 85-90 degrees low humidity ie Arizona in May

#2 - Cloudy 40 degrees 20 mph winds w/ higher gusts and an empty golf course. ie UNY in November.

Born and raised in the deep south. It doesn't seem right unless it's at least 90* and 90% humidity.

In the land of 4 seasons, I like four different weather conditions.

Winter:  30-40 degrees, sunny with a light breeze and firm turf

Spring:  50-70 degrees, sunny and breezy with firm turf

Summer:  70-90 degrees, hot but not humid, firm turf

Fall:  50-60 degrees, breezy, firm turf

It may be rough on the superintendents in this area, but it is fun to play all year round.  I wouldn't enjoy golf quite as much without the change of seasons.

Peter,
I felt like that in northern Indiana too...hence the move to Albuquerque where it happens much more frequently. I'd agree with those that say slightly colder is better than the hot/humid stuff. I played here in mid-50's to low-60's weather last week and it was very comfortable.

At the lower end of wearing shorts and starting the round a little chilly and warm up as you walk.  About 60-65, wind 10-12.  I sweat perfusely and can drench a shirt in any humidity if temp is between 65-70.  Above that and I really cook.

I'd rather play in 40s than 90s.  Ideally, I prefer late morning into early afternoon times.  Finish by 2:30-3pm, and then refreshment time.  I don't like early morning before 8:30 and prefer twighlight rounds.

Put me down with Andy, Bill and Peter.  It seems obvious and logical to me that I too have enough challenges in this game without weather making it tougher.  Oh, a bit of wind is fun as a change of pace... But the idea of playing the game for me is to have fun, and I have the most fun when weather is NOT an issue to be dealt with.

BUT... I'd add a corollary:  if I go to places with notorious wind or otherwise difficult weather, I want to see it - I don't want to miss the experience.  So in Scotland, hell yes it's "nae wind, nae golf."  And while I don't want to get snowed out in a couple weeks up there in Bandon - and I'd sure take a day or two of nice weather - well it would be a drag if we didn't play in at least SOME strong wind.  I have a feeling though that this won't be an issue and my prospects for the rounds up there belong as an answer in the other thread.

 ;)

Huck, I agree, that if it is a place of notorious wind, then 20-30mph makes it interesting.  Such courses are generally built for wind, with wide FWs and firm.  So, when I get to Nebraska, I enjoy it.  But, in the midwest-tree lined typical parkland courses, I prefer a wind of 10-12, where it will move your ball, and make you think on club selection, but it don't swing your ball 30+ yards.  For a weaker player like me, that spells too much jail time on overly treed courses.

Dick - YES!  Right on brother.  Sand Hills area of Nebraska is a perfect example... playing those great courses in NO wind, I'd come home thinking I really missed out. And I am right with you in that 10-12mph is enough... 1-2 club wind.  More that than gets to be goofy golf - fun to experience from time to time, but one's misses get so brutally punished, and one has to hit so many just "give up" shots, that it's overkill.

Sunshine, cool but not cold (60-65F), breezy but not windy (10-15mph), low humidity. Maybe a sweater for the first couple holes in the morning. A dry, firm, fast course. A view of an ocean is nice.

Oh, and being able to lift clean and place the ball on every shot ::) Just kidding  :P

P.S. Check out my tiny "avatar" picture for an example of just such a morning. The afternoon round down the street was a whole 'nother matter.

While I will play in any conditions, my favorite is a cool fall day. October in western Mass or southern Vermont as the foliage changes. Blue sky. Light breeze. Smell of burning leaves. Depending on the day and the course, maybe even the sound of a marching band at a high school football game in the air.

I'm voting for Dan Callahan weather.

But if I can't have that, I'll take anything between no snow and low '90s. Anything hotter (especially with humidity) and my body and brain both tend to start shutting down.

To tie in with a couple of the other threads r.e. Pebble Beach, my favorite weather conditions occured the 1 time I've gotten to play PB:

Sunny spring day, a little cool in the morning - just enough to wear a wind vest but warm enough to wear shorts.  Low humidity, gentle breeze.

I'll take two as well:

First, about an 80 degree day with hardly a breath of wind, preferably by the ocean--total serenity; and

Second, a warm autumn day in the neighborhood of 55-60 degrees with a 1- or 1 1/2-club wind and college football in the air.

78 and sunny with a breath of breeze coming off the Southern Atlantic or Gulf (Wednesday or Thursday in Nassau (so the Weather Channel says)) or 60-65 bright and sunny earl October day in the northeast with the leaves having some color and no one out playing golf.
