The Cardigan ...
« on: December 21, 2006, 01:06:18 AM »
Perhaps it is the shopping season (aka Spendmas), strolling through the Men's Department of your local Macys, Nordstrom or Kmart ... Perhaps it was this photo posted a week or so ago, I believe it was Shivas (not his real name) who mentioned it but what the heck happened to the cardigan?

Classic, stylish, functional, promoting an aire of elegance, it has been replaced by the modern sweatshirts, windshirts and fleece.

What other classic and stylish GCA design features have gone by the wayside like the cardigan?

Well there are a few things that have thankfully disappeared from this scene, like cigarettes, crazy golf swings and trousers that are 3 inches too short. Oh and I think photoshop has eliminated pictures with severe tilts.

With the eye looking at the center cut with its buttons perhaps the logos will not show up as well?

Hogan was as  8)  8)  8)  8) as it gets on a golf course.

I think you are referring to what are known at "kilties" - those flaps that covered the laces on your golf shoes.

Jeff,

They are so much daintier than the black and whites, I had the latter, Beaufort, there was a photo of him about a year ago when he went down.

It's not just the cardigan (which I love) but the poofy sleeves that curled over your cuff. See the poof in Palmer's sleeves in the photo.

Back in the sixties all my sweaters had sleeves that did that.

Ou sont les pullovers d'antan avec les manches gonflee?

I always thought of them as old man sweaters, but I must be getting old, because I actually saw one in a golf shop recently and said, "Hmmm,......"

The trouble with the cardigans worn there by Palmer is that they were made from alpaca. Here in Pebble Beach the wind just whistled through the holes in the knitting.

The microfiber cardigan may very well be a business idea with legs.

Cardigans with legs! Now THERE'S a new idea!

P.S. to Jeff -- Oh, I think you'd look just keen in a cardigan. I can see you now, speeding down the cart path toward No. 17 at the Quarry, dressed smartly in your cardigan, when, darting across the path... oh, no! That poor creature!

It looks like some people made both pictures but loss their sense of fashion while making the trip.

The demise of the cardigan is one of the great fashion tragedies of recent time.

I'd add pleated khakis with cuffs to the list.
