Ballyneal Photos/Spirit of the Game

On Ballyneal's website I just saw some updated photos of Ben Crenshaw and Bill Coore playing at Ballyneal with Tom Doak in what was I believe the Renaissance Cup.  

I think this should be noted as a wonderful example of the Spirit of the Game and GCA's who are at the top of their field coming together to share their craft, irrespective of authorship.  

More professions should strive for this spirit!

It is interesting to compare Ballyneal to Pronghorn and how natural Ballyneal looks and the movement in the fairways which makes everything seem so random and makes every shot unique.  The photo of the approach shot to 17 with the wildflowers doesn't need to be a golf course to be absolutely stunning.  It is truly special.

Here's a view of some of that spirit.



The fourth gentleman is our Super, Dave Hensley. I can only imagine how nervous he had to be.

Mike, Sheryl did a quick change on me. I had played in the rain in the morning. Drove home. Was there for 11 minutes were I did the quick change and back in-time for the ribbon-cutting.
Also, In the other picture of me showing Randy Fair the slant to the second green, I'm sporting my Black Mesa surfer hat. Accompanied with my Rustic Canyon wind shirt. Tre' Public

I didn't realize the achievement of Ballyneal until I compared it with the Pronghorn pics.  To say that the two bunker styles mimic each other is to say that Britney Spears is a cultural icon in the same way that Marilyn Monroe was!  I won't pass on any of the architectural merits of Ballyneal since I've never played it, but from pictures it absolutely is the gold standard for a "natural" course in the United States.  In many spots, one is hard pressed to determine whether something is a bunker or a God-made blowout.  Pronghorn looks fun as hell, and the bunkering is cool, but it is not a work of art like Ballyneal is.

The most interesting character in the photo is the guy in the back left - the caddie - I forgot his name but he is a retired navy guy who has studied every inch of the course.  Rupert told us that he would spend hours of his own time just walking the course and trying to understand all of its nuances - the younger caddies respect him and he was helping them when we played - a real credit to the game.
