Cape Cod-style bunkers?
« on: November 09, 2006, 02:46:34 PM »
I was just looking at my 365 Golf Holes desk calendar(I love a new golf hole picture each day, does anybody else have one?) and it has Gateway Golf and CC hole # 11 pictured indicating Cape Cod style bunkers. I have never golfed on the east coast and am still learning about GCA, what constitutes a Cape Cod style bunker? I can't tell for sure from the picture, but the style reminds me of Nicklaus course bunkers I have played out here on the West coast.
I love golf, the fightin irish, and beautiful women depending on the season and availability.

I haven't gotten a response on this yet, any east coast architects have an answer?

I saw that and laughed out loud at the assertion....

I don't think you would find anything on the Cape that would be particular to the area.

The only thing you may be able to attribute to Cape Cod golf as a style is that most courses are lined with pine, and the trees seem to grow to a uniform maximum height, perhaps due to the wind that sweeps over the peninsula.  Many Cape coures are built on sand, but there isn't a specific bunker style.
So I jump ship in Hong Kong....

Tim;

I had one of the 365 day golf calendars you mentioned (maybe twice in the last ten calendar years), and though I enjoyed flipping the pages each day to a new course/picture, I learned to take many of the captions with a grain of salt.  Many times the statements associated with each golf hole didn't 'ring true', and seemed to me to be simply 'fill in' by an enthusiastic, well meaning, but
ultimately unsophisticated copywriter.

Looks like this could be one of those times!

Regards,

Tom

ps..........75 mph winds here at Bandon last night!  I hear on the other coast when it gets this windy, they give it a name.
Here it's just 'more wind, more golf'!!!
